Evaluating Media Using the MIL Framework

I. Background Information for Learners

Media and information literacy are best fulfilled when we learn from each other. From the way
we try to decipher the meanings embedded in the media messages to the way we encode
messages in our own media productions, media and information literacy comes in full circle
when we experience being in both sides of the media structure.
This lesson will continue the learning process by having you critique the creations
made by others. The objective is to learn how to take criticism as well as to give them.
The objective of this lesson is to help us present our media productions to an audience
and engage in their feedback. As a 21st century citizen in training, ethical behavior in receiving
and giving out criticism should prevail on both sides. The production team’s side as well as
the audience side. Constructive Criticism should be the top priority of the discussion.
Question and inquiries on various production techniques as well as concept development
should also be entertained.
To execute this lesson, you will have a screening session of a film production, a
commercial, a sample photojournalism photography output, a campaign adds for social
change, and a song.
