Course Description:
English I is a language course aimed at facilitating the achievement of the general competences for
level A1 of the Common European Framework, described as follows:
The learner will be able to:
• Understand and use very frequently used everyday expressions as well as simple phrases to
meet immediate needs.
• Introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details
such as where he/she lives, things he/she has and people he/she knows.
• Ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she
knows and things he/she has.
• Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to
cooperate.
Our approach is based on the concept of Communicative Competence defined as the ability to use
language correctly and appropriately in order to achieve communication goals in specific contexts.
The goal of our language courses is to enable learners to express themselves confidently, accurately
and fluently in speaking and writing and to understand spoken and written language as used in the
world today in a variety of settings. Our methodology will, therefore, facilitate such goals by
creating communicative opportunities in each lesson through a variety of techniques (debates, role-
plays, projects, integrated-skills tasks, etc.) These activities will be based on communicative
functions needed for everyday life.
Successful language learning also requires a great deal of learner autonomy. Through Pearson
Education’s online platform MyEnglishLab, our learners will engage in multiple learning activities
based on the communicative functions explored in class.

Course Competences:
Assessment:
The semester is divided into three academic terms. Each one has a different percentage and students
are required to get the minimum passing grade (3.0) to pass. A grade under 3.0 is considered a
failing grade. Please refer to the following chart:
Passing
Term Percentage
grade
First 30%
3.0 Second 35%
Third 35%
The grades must be uploaded to BANNER during the dates established by the Registrar’s office as
shown on the following chart:
Assessment activities
A grading system is used to record students’ class performance. The following chart shows the
activities/tasks class participants have to work on and the different percentages they have in the first,
second and third midterms, which represent a 30%, 35% and 35% each:
Language functions: Functions are the means students need to master the target language through
the study and practice of grammar structures and vocabulary use in real-life situations. Functions
will enable students to use language well in different contexts by exchanging messages with different
people at different register levels. This assessment will be carried out via quizzes, and the teacher
will explain, in a timely manner, when and how these quizzes will be carried out.
My English Lab (MEL): On this platform, students will practice all different aspects learned in the
different lessons. Activities will be assigned periodically by the teacher, and they are to be done on
the assignment link and not on the course link. All students are required to buy the book since the
first week of class to be able to complete the assignments and for further language practice.
Classwork: This category will assess how the student engages in controlled, guided, and
independent tasks through teacher-student, student-student and student-teacher interactions. The
teacher will determine when and how these interactions are assessed and registered during classtime,
thus creating a comprehensible evaluation.
Written Midterm Exam: The written exam will assess students’ knowledge and skills, such as
listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. The student should be able to complete
different types of test items, including true/false and multiple-choice exercises, cloze sentences with
or without word banks, open-ended questions, etc. The materials for the written exam will be
provided by the UTB Language Center.
Oral Midterm Exam: The oral exam will be carried out by the teacher on an individual, pair or
group basis with tasks or questions to be performed based on the communicative objectives of each
term. The materials for the oral exam will be provided by the UTB Language Center.
