Task at Hand

 Make a timeline of what happened on 27 April 1521 from the point of view of
the Spaniards and another timeline for the natives.

POINT OF VIEW OF THE SPANIARDS

The Spanish Colonial period of the Philippines began when explorer Ferdinand Magellan came
1521 to the islands in 1521 and claimed it as a colony for the Spanish Empire

Cilapulapu refused to obey the king of Spagnia. So, Zula a chief of Matan, requested the
April
captain-general for a boatload of men to fight against the natives.

NATIVES POINT OF VIEW

APRIL 26,1521  Zula’s plan to ally with Magellan

was revealed on the night of
April 26 when he sent his son to
offer two goats to the
Spaniards. He could also have
fulfilled his other promises had
Lapu-Lapu recognized the king
of Spain.
 Already angered by Lapu-Lapu’s
obstinacy, Magellan was
persuaded to send his men to
help Zula defeat Lapu-Lapu.
 Magellan wanted to personally
teach Lapu-Lapu a lesson. “We
begged him not to go,”
Pigafetta wrote, “but he, like a
good shepherd, refused to
abandon his flock.”
 With 60 men and accompanied
by Humabon and other chiefs in
20 to 30 balanghai, Magellan
sailed for Mactan that midnight,
reaching the island three hours
before dawn. He waited until
daybreak before sending
another message to Lapu-Lapu
to surrender to Spanish
sovereignty. The native held his
ground.
APRIL 27, 1521  Magellan’s men used standard
European arms, such as swords,
crossbows and muskets, while the
natives wielded bamboo lances and
stakes, as well as stones and mud.
 Even with their enemies’ puny arms,
“we could scarcely defend ourselves,”
Pigafetta wrote.
 When they saw their homes in flames,
they became more furious. “So, they
charged down upon us that they shot
the captain through the right leg with
poisoned arrows.”
 With the snake venom taking its toll on
his body, Magellan ordered a retreat.
However, the pullback was slow.
Besides fending off the raining bamboo
spears, wading through the muddy
shores of Mactan on boots must have
also aggravated the situation of the
Spaniards.
 This gave the defenders the chance to
pounce on them. Specifically directing
their attention at Magellan, whom the
natives saw as the leader, “many turned
upon him that they knocked his helmet
… twice.”
 Embellishing his story with a dose of
chivalric fiction, Pigafetta continued:
“But he (Magellan) always stood firmly
like a good knight …. Thus, did we fight
for more than an hour, refusing to retire
farther.”
 Unbelievable as it may seem, the end
finally came for Magellan. “An Indian
hurled a bamboo spear on the captain’s
face, but the latter immediately killed
him with his lance.”
 He wanted to draw out his sword but
before he could do this, the natives “all
hurled themselves upon him.”
Wounded by a kampilan or cutlass,
Magellan fell face down.

TASK AT HAND

1. What does the document want to convey?

- It conveys the message about the Proclamation of Philippine Independence in Kawit
Cavite on June 12, 1898. It states there that we Filipinos are free under Spain Crown.
Moreover, it is about conferring upon the famous Dictator Don Emilio Aguinaldo all the
powers necessary to enable him to discharge the duties of Government, including the
prerogatives of granting pardon and amnesty. And lastly, it also discussed the meaning
of the symbols of the Philippine flag.
2. How did the revolutionaries regard Aguinaldo base on this document?
- “The colors of Blue, Red, and White, commemorating the flag of the United States of
America, as a manifestation of our profound gratitude towards this Great Nation for its
disinterested protection which it lent us and continues lending us”.
3. According to the document, what do the symbols in the Philippine flag represent?
- The Philippine national flag has a rectangular design that consists of a white equilateral
triangle, symbolizing liberty, equality and fraternity; a horizontal blue stripe for peace,
truth, and justice; and a horizontal red stripe for patriotism and valor.
4. How did the Filipinos regard the United States of America based on the document?
- The ensuing Philippine-American War lasted three years and resulted in the death of
over 4,200 American and over 20,000 Filipino combatants. As many as 200,000 Filipino
civilians died from violence, famine, and disease. The decision by U.S. policymakers to
annex the Philippines was not without domestic controversy.
5. What is the importance of this document in the history of our country?
- It is a really important document indeed for it reminds us Filipinos of the day we have
set free from Spaniard’s colonization. It reminds us the word freedom that we seek from
a very long time. Many of us Filipinos offered their lives just to fight for our beloved land.
It is such a long story but, in the end, we are free. Free from slavery and blasphemy of
other country.

F. Reflection

How can analyzing primary sources contextually and in terms of content

enable you to understand and appreciate our history?

- The history we know today is based on primary sources that are the products of their
social and cultural environment. To better understand the primary source, one must
examine the environment that produced it. That will help us to evaluate whether the
history we are taught today is an accurate reflection of the evolution our country or the
world has gone through.
MODULE 4

F. Reflection
Choose one issue (social, political, economic or cultural) affecting your community at
present. Make a narrative and analysis about this issue.

“SKYLINE VIEWDECK ENTRANCE FEE OF RESIDENT AND NON-RESIDENT”

Skyline viewdeck is also known as pidlisan it is a dispute between Quirino, San

Emilio and Del Pilar but it is already owned by the Municipality of Quirino Ilocos Sur. Time
pass by it is improved as Skyline Viewdeck and many people land a business along the high
way of the said viewdeck. Many riders and tourist visited that place because of the Sea of
Clouds that they might see especially in the morning sun rises. Moreover, even though
pandemic is hitting our country, still many riders and tourist find their way to go there. But
because of undisciplined people the Municipality of Quirino draft an ordinance and
resolution about resident and non-resident to pay for their entrance fee as their pay for the
facilitator in the said tourist spot. And there’s many disagree and agree about this
resolution. In my own analysis it is good that they make a resolution for the entrance fee so
that the people go there will be limited especially in this time of pandemic to avoid the
spreading of virus in our place.
