All the possible combinations CBR, DLC thickness, Shoulder type and Traffic have been incorporated and the optimum slab thickness against
every combination has been figured out with the help of the IRC: 58-2015 excel sheet. In all the possible combinations, the GSB and CTB
thicknesses are kept constant at 225 mm and 150 mm as they don’t have any direct impact on the design thickness of the slab due to the presence
of the DLC layer.
Table 1 shows all the combinations and corresponding slab thicknesses (before and after considering tinning), Dia-Spacing-Length of Dowel and
Tie bars.
Table 1: Variation of slab thickness with change of CBR, DLC thickness, Shoulder type and Traffic
From Table 1 it is very difficult to conclude the effect of any parameter on the design slab thickness. Therefore, the following graphs have been
plotted to see the effect of different parameters on the thickness of the slab. The parameters considered are-
• Traffic
• K-Value
• DLC Thickness
• Shoulder Type
Slab Thickness vs Traffic
For DLC- 100 mm, Shoulder: Earthen, K-value= 300, CBR= 20%

Traffic (CVPD)
From Fig. 1.1, it has been observed that with the increase in traffic (when all other parameters
were kept constant), there is significant increase in the PQC slab thickness. This is because,
with traffic, the load stresses increase.

K-value (MPa/m)
From Fig. 1.2, it has been observed that with the increase in K-value (when all other parameters
were kept constant), the PQC slab thickness doesn’t get affected much.

DLC Thickness (mm)
From Fig. 1.3, it has been observed that with the increase in DLC-thickness (when all other
parameters were kept constant), there is no change in the PQC slab thickness. This is because,
for the DLC thicknesses and the constant parameters we considered in this graph, K-values are
same (=300 MPa/m) and hence no change is seen.

Shoulder Type
From Fig. 1.4, it has been observed that with change in shoulder type (when all other
parameters were kept constant), there is significant change in the PQC slab thickness. This is
because, in the presence of tied concrete shoulder, the edge load stress gets reduced by almost
30%.
So, it can be concluded that the changes in K-value have little effect on the thickness of the
PQC slab. This is because k value is restricted to 300 MPa/m. Hence, even though there is an
increase in CBR value and DLC thickness, the k-value being underestimated will lead to same
slab thickness for higher strength subgrade carrying same traffic loads.
The other parameter that also has little effect on the thickness of the PQC slab is DLC thickness.
However, from Fig. 1.1 and Fig. 1.4 it is evident that the dominating parameters affecting
the pavement thickness are-
1. Traffic (CVPD)
2. Shoulder Type (Earthen or Tied)
