TOPIC VENUE FACILITY

Bolshoy Ice Dome – Russia

Bolshoy Ice Dome is a stadium that located in Russia. It was constructed by architect firm
named Mostovik, leaded by Andrey Ustinov. What interesting about the Bolshoy Ice Dome is
it was the only building of Olympic Facility to achieve the ‘BREEAM Green Certification’.
The venue was named ‘Bolshoy’ because when translated it means ‘big’, ‘large’ or ‘huge’ etc.
Bolshoy Ice Dome start its construction in 2009 and completed in 2012, it roughly takes 3 years
of construction and cost around US$300 million. In 2014 this venue was used for the 2014
Winter Olympic. In Russia, ice related sport was very popular such as ice hockey, ice ballet,
ice skating and many more. The main purpose for this venue is to serve as main arena for men
and women’s ice hockey tournament throughout the Games.

Firstly, the construction of the stadium itself was using some kind of unique type of
construction which known as ‘Geoplast Formwork’. Geoplast is actually a recyclable and
environmental-friendly plastic material which is the better substitute of conventional material
like timber/wood and steel formwork. Geoplast known as better material than timber and steel
because it was more durable, high resistance and very practical to use. There are many
advantages from the Geoplast Formwork such as light, high durability (up to 80kN/m² of
pressure), simple to use, easy to install and remove etc.

Next, Bolshoy Ice Dome also known as ‘Glass Dome’ due to the structure mostly covered
by glass. The architectural highlight of the stadium is its roof, which is illuminated in different
colours at night by an arrangement of 38,000 LED lights, also allowing its use as a scoreboard
for the results of the competitions. During the day, the silver structure of the metallic aluminium
surface is supposed to have the appearance of frozen raindrops. The adjoining shell of frosted
glass creates a relationship between inside and outside. While the transparent façade allows
visitors during the day to experience the surrounding nature and the Black Sea, passers-by at
night can glimpse the events inside through the glass façade. The elliptical, 40meter high glass
dome has a surface of nearly 32,000 square metres and spans 193 metres in length as well as
142 metres in width.

The design was very unique, Visitors enter the stadium through an open and spacious lobby,
which leads directly into the terraces and into the supply floors below that accommodate the
athlete and training areas and media centre, as well as the technical facilities, car tunnel and
parking levels. The entire design of the ground plan follows the elliptical form of the building
and is oriented toward the ice surface in the centre. The forms and colours become more
condensed as one nears this focal point. While the lobby is characterised by ample air and glass,
light-coloured floors, open galleries, sweeping surfaces and the colour white, the wine-red seats
in the arena immediately draw attention to this area as the centre of the action.
