The term “research” is related to seek out the information
and knowledge on a particular topic or subject. In other
words, research is an art of systematic investigation.

Originated from the old French word “recerchier”

meaning to search and search again.

Research is a process of inquiry and investigation; it is

systematic, methodical and ethical; research can help
solve practical problems and increase knowledge.
It is the systematic investigation into and study of materials
and sources to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

Investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and

interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the
light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised
theories or laws.

THE OF RESEARCH CAN BE GROUPED
INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES:
• To achieve skillfulness with a trend or to get novel
opinions into it (research with this objective can be
termed as exploratory or formulative)
• To find out the characteristics of a particular
character, condition or a grouping (research with
this objective can be termed as descriptive
research)
• To establish the relationship with which something
occurs or with which it is related with something
else (research with this objective are known as
diagnostic research)

• To test a hypothesis of a reasonable liaison

between different variables (this type of research
can be grouped into hypothesis-testing research).
THE OF RESEARCH ARE THE FOLLOWING:
- Exploration is finding
out about some previously unexamined
phenomenon.
- Description refers to the
data-based information-gathering activities.
- An
explanatory study goes beyond description and
attempts to establish cause and-effect relationship
between variables.
- seeks to answer when and in
what situations the event will occur, if it can be
provided plausible explanation for the vent in
question.
Hence, research objective of a given research study
may also fall under either of the following broad
categories.

Descriptive research consists of
survey and fact-finding
investigation of different kinds.
The main purpose of descriptive Analytical research, the
research is explanation of the set researcher could be using the
of circumstances as it is present facts, information, data which is

material.
Applied research refers to finding
a solution for specific, practical
problem facing by an individual,
society or an industrial or
business organization.
Fundamental research is
mainly concerned with
overview and with the
formulation of a theory.
In natural sciences and social
sciences, quantitative research is
based on the aspect of quantity
or extent.
Qualitative research involves
looking in-depth at non-
numerical data. It is more
naturalistic or anthropological.
Conceptual research is related to
some abstract idea(s) or theory.

Empirical research relies on

– IDENTIFYING THE
RESEARCH PROBLEM

A research problem is a statement about an area of

concern, a condition to be improved, a difficulty to be
eliminated, or a troubling question that exists in
scholarly literature, in theory, or in practice that
points to the need for meaningful understanding and
deliberate investigation.
Identification and formulation of a research problem constitutes
the starting phase of research. It is the first and foremost step in
any research undertaking. In fact, success of research depends
upon the selection of an appropriate research problem and its
proper formulation

Research usually begins with the identification of a problem

followed by formulation of research questions or objectives.
Proceeding from this the researcher determines how best to
answer these questions and so decides what information to collect,
how it will be collected, and how it will be analyzed in order to
answer the research question.
1. Introduce the reader to the importance of the topic
being studied. The reader is oriented to the significance
of the study and the research questions or hypotheses
to follow.
2. Places the problem into a particular context that defines
the parameters of what is to be investigated.
3. Provides the framework for reporting the results and
indicates what is probably necessary to conduct the
study and explain how the findings will present this
information.

• Architectural research requires a global or holistic
understanding of architecture. It is linked to the central
activity of architects: design.

• It is a development/extension/ innovation of architectural

practices.

• The essence of architecture as a profession lies in its

practice. Everything that makes a difference to its
philosophy and approach is application-based.
Interpretive/ Historical Research
