WOOD SUBSTITUTES
What is Wood Substitute?
Manufactured boards?

Making boards and sheets from wood or wood products:

– Veneers
– Sawdust
– Wood fibres
– Wood strips
– Wood flakes
Some advantages of manufactured boards are……
• Availability of Large sheet sizes
• Uniform thickness
• Stable – no shrinkage
• Do not warp
• Little waste and Efficient use
• Economical alternative
• TYPES OF WOOD SUBSTITUTES

• Veneers and veneer ply woods

• Particle board
• Hard board
• Fiberboard
• Block board
• Glulam
• Laminates
• Cement particle board
• E-board
• Bamboo ply
1. VENEERS
Veneer is a thin sheet of wood either
sliced or peeled from a log or flitch.

2. PLYWOOD

• A very strong board which is constructed

of layers of veneer which are glued at 90
degrees to each other.
• PLYWOOD

• Plywood is a type of manufactured timber made from thin

sheets of wood veneer . It is one of the most widely used
wood products.

• A very strong board which is constructed of layers of

veneer which are glued at 90 degrees to each other.

• It is flexible, cheap, workable, re-usable, and can usually

be locally manufactured.
• PLYWOOD_TYPES

• Plywood is a panel product manufactured by gluing one or more veneers to both sides of a central veneer
layer or a lumber-strip core.
• PLYWOOD_TYPES

• In all plywood products, the species, thickness, and

grain direction of each layer are matched with those of
its counterpart on the other side of the central layer.

• Consequently, the total number of layers is usually odd

(three, five, or more)
• PLYWOOD
• PLYWOOD_CHARECTERISTICS

• Very strong since it is made up of multiple layers of veneer

• Dimensional stability
• Does not split easily when nailed
• Smooth uniform finish
• Uniformity of strength,
• Panel form, and decorative value
• PLYWOOD_APPLICATION

• In addition to being made into flat panels, plywood is manufactured in curved

form (molded plywood), which is used for boats, furniture, and other
products.
• PLYWOOD_SIZES

• The dimensions of plywood boards available:

• a) 2400 × 1200 mm
• b) 2100 × 1200 mm
• c) 1800 × 1200 mm
• d) 2100 × 900 mm
• e) 1800 × 900 mm

• Thickness
• 3 mm,4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 19 mm,22 mm and 25 mm.
3. BLOCK BOARD
It is similar to plywood but, the center
layer or core is made from strips of
softwood
• BLOCK BOARD

• Blockboard is made up of softwood strips and veneers. They are manufactured by placing softwood
strips edge to edge and sandwiched between veneers and then this sandwich is glued together with
high pressure.
• BLOCK BOARD_TYPES:

• The specification for Block Boards shall conform to IS

1659: 2004 and are as given below:

• Types:

• BWP Grade — Such block board may be used for bus

bodies, railway coaches, prefabricated houses, etc.,
where it is likely to be exposed to high humidity and for
external use.
• MR Grade— Such block board may be used for interior
use such as furniture, partition, panelling, ceiling, etc.
• BLOCK BOARD_FEATURES:

• The blockboard is lighter than the plywood

• They do not crack easily
• They are highly durable and suitable for applications where long
pieces of wood have to be used.
• They can be laminated, painted and veneered
• It is easy to work with for the carpenters
• They do not split or warp
• They are not likely to bend easily when heavy objects are placed on
them
• BLOCK BOARD_SIZES:

• They are available in different thicknesses ranging from

12mm-50mm

• The standard size of block board is 2440 X1220 X 30 mm

4. LAMINATES

• It is a composite artificial material, made by

pressing together thin layers of flat paper
and plastic resins.
• The upper layer is printed with a decorative
pattern or color.
• LAMINATES_TYPES:

• There are different types of laminated

sheets available in India based on the
manufacturing process, usage, surface
finish, thickness, and advanced properties.

• High-pressure and low-pressure laminates

• Decorative Laminates:
• Industrial Laminates:
• Compact laminates
• LAMINATES_FINISHES:
• LAMINATES_PROPERTIES:

• Laminates are fairly durable and scratch resistant.

• They are more resistant to wear and tear, moisture, and heat when
compared to veneer and solid wood products.
• However, laminated surfaces tend to warp when exposed to excess
water.
• Since they are brittle materials, these are also prone to chipping
• LAMINATES_FLOORING:
5. BAMBOO PLY

• Bamboo plywood is constructed through

lining up several layers of bamboo parallel
and/or perpendicular to each other, which is
then heat-pressed into single sheets.
• BAMBOO PLY

• The age of the plant, the moisture it has

received, and the time of harvest all affect
the hardness of the material.

• Bamboo plywood can be used for a variety

of furniture, kitchen cabinets, Wall paneling
etc.
• BAMBOO PLY

• Bamboo plywood is environmentally sustainable

• Bamboo plywood tends to be durable. In fact, it is 25 percent harder than red oak and 12 percent
harder than Maple wood, and a tensile strength of 28,000 per square inch.
• Flexibility
• Durability and strength, the material is stable even when applied in a variety of unusual settings.
• WALL PANEL_TYPICAL FIXING METHODS

Split battens
Split battens are fixed to the wall and to the back of the panels,
which are then simply lifted into place.

Z Bar system :
Aluminum interlocking sections can be used in a similar way to
split battens. One section is fixed to the wall and the other to the
back of the panels, and the panels are lifted and hooked on.
