OVERVIEW
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) is accepting applications to hire As-Needed
Student Professional Workers for the following twelve projects:
DISTRICT OPERATIONS (10): Work with constituents, engineers, and council offices to investigate
traffic-related requests and to identify and implement solutions. Assist with engineering field
investigations, collect traffic data, conduct measurements at various locations, prepare work orders
for traffic control devices, review traffic records and planning documents, assist with research
studies, analyze data, complete technical worksheets and prepare reports, input data into computer
systems, update records, and maintain files, and correspond with constituents. These positions will
be assigned to offices located in San Pedro, Downtown Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, Hollywood,
Van Nuys, and Reseda. These positions may allow up to 50% telecommuting option.
ADVANCED TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS AND RESEARCH (2): Working on software projects related
to the Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC) system modernization. The positions will
work at either the LADOT main office or remotely.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS GROUP (1): Software project for LADBS ePlanLA API integration, assist in
maintaining software documentation, document software release plan and timelines, perform user
acceptance testing, possible opportunity to build and maintain business intelligence reports and
dashboards. Position will be able to work at the LADOT main office or remotely.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (2): Assist the team of Systems Analysts with tasks such as installation
and maintenance of computer systems including software and hardware; troubleshooting and
resolving issues with network access, software or hardware; meeting with staff to provide one-on-
one technical assistance as necessary.
DESIGN (6): Perform AutoCAD using GIS based information to prepare traffic signal and striping
maps, condition diagrams, area maps, signal and geometric design plans. Research City records and
obtain information from other agencies as required for the preparation of the plans. Conduct field
checks of traffic control and roadway conditions to complete base conditions for new plans or to
verify the completion of proposed plans. After training at the LADOT main office, these positions are
expected to allow about 50% telecommuting option.
PARKING METER PLANNING (2): Assist the engineering staff with field investigations, parking
studies, and the preparation of work orders, assist with preparing reports and correspondence,
presentations, and other forms of communication, assist with the management and expansion of LA
Express Park program by assisting staff to conduct research, develop and implement innovative
technology solutions, and best practices related to smart parking meter systems.
PROJECT COORDINATION AND EVALUATION (1): Collect various transportation and non-
transportation datasets through software and application queries. Perform video studies and/or
behavioral studies for evaluating the outcomes of transportation projects. Perform data analysis and
prepare summaries through charts, graphics, and reports. Assist with the management of the
department’s Walk & Bike Count, including performing data collection, analysis, and report
generation. Perform in-field data collection, observations, and photograph pre and post-project
conditions as needed. This position is 100% telecommuting during the emergency order, with
exceptions when field work is required.
L.A. AL FRESCO PROGRAM (1): Create program documentation and materials, graphics, and other
visual material for the program, including maps, flyers, presentations, or webpage contents. Perform
initial review of new applications to ensure minimum requirements have been met. Provide
recommendations for approval or modification. Communicate with applicants via email and
telephone to answer questions; provide status updates, and obtain more information regarding Al
Fresco requests. Maintain databases of new Al Fresco requests, application and installation status,
and completed installations. Create weekly, monthly, and quarterly metrics related to the program.
Perform field checks and take site photos of existing and potential Al Fresco locations as needed.
This position will be 100% telecommuting during the emergency order, with exceptions when field
work is required.
VISION ZERO PLANNING (1): Provide Web content support (proposing and developing blog posts or
other relevant content, keeping project information up to date, etc.). Create graphics, maps, and
visual materials for outreach and education materials. Research best practices for planning and
implementing street safety projects. Compile collision and traffic data sets as needed. Assist in or
perform field site visits. Attend outreach and engagement events on behalf of Vision Zero/LADOT.
Serve as liaison to stakeholders and neighborhood actors in community engagement activities.
Positions will be 100% telecommuting during the emergency order, with exceptions when field work
is required.
VISION ZERO ENGINEERING (1): Make Field visits to check design sites for constraints and existing
conditions. Prepare base plans for geometric and signal design in AutoCAD. Design signal and
striping plans. Positions will be 100% telecommuting during the emergency order, with exceptions
when field work is required.
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING (1): Create Conceptual designs for Bicycle facilities in
Streetmix or other software. Conduct feasibility studies for Bicycle facilities. Make Field visits to
check design sites for constraints and existing conditions. Prepare base plans for geometric and
signal design in AutoCAD. Design signal and striping plans. Positions will be 100% telecommuting
during the emergency order, with exceptions when field work is required.
For each position description, there is a general note regarding telecommuting options; however, for
highly qualified candidates that attend a university out of the Los Angeles area, we may be able to
modify the work plan to accommodate full-time telecommuting. These positions are exempt from the
civil service provisions of the City Charter and will serve at the will of management. Information

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
1) For any of the positions, must be at least sophomore level or higher, currently enrolled in a
recognized four year university or college and continuing work toward a degree in a related field
relevant to the internship, such as engineering, computer science/engineering, urban planning,

2) For the Design positions, currently enrolled in a junior college, community college, trade school,
or technical school working toward a degree or in a certificate program that requires at least 12
semester units or 18 quarter units in Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) AND completion
of one course in Geometry and Trigonometry. The math class requirements may be satisfied
from a high school.
1) Experience with Microsoft Offices suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
2) Experience with Google Products, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive
3) Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as research and documentation.
4) Ability to work independently as well as in small groups.
5) Strong problem solving and analytical skills
6) Able to commit at least 10 hours per week during school year (except mid-term and final
weeks) and 20-30 hours during vacation times.

SELECTION PROCESS
An application screening may be conducted to select the most qualified candidates for an interview
process that may include a writing sample or other demonstration of an assignment specific desired
qualification. Applicants will undergo a review of qualifications, including a background check and
medical clearance, before a final job offer can be made.
