IPMS Ipswich – 2021 Competition Season Report

A second strange year; confined to barracks for the first half of the year. As we’ve said to each other
countless times, we’ve been quite fortunate in that our hobby is one that is largely solitary and done
in the comfort of our own home. Although we did miss the opportunity to go to shows and see what
everyone else has been up to.

We didn’t get to meet up in person until August, so seven of our twelve meetings in 2021 were held
virtually via FaceBook. But it was worth the wait, and we had a wonderful all-day bash on a bright,
sunny Saturday that was thoroughly enjoyed by all; getting together once again with old friends we
hadn’t seen for eighteen months, and meeting for the first time new friends who had joined the Club
during lockdown.

We had 15 competitions over the year, twelve normal monthly comps and three theme comps:
‘Mellow Yellow’, ‘All At Sea’ and ‘No Sleigh!’. Twenty-nine members entered a total of 227 models
between them, beating 2019’s record (of 170 models) by a substantial margin. So a very prolific
year, skewed a little by the hang-over from Covid-induced missed meetings, but still worthy of
mention are the nine members whose entries were into double figures:-

Modeller Models Entered

Frank Bell 26
Andy Chapman

Steve Turner
Bob James 16
Geoff Woods 15
Ben Wellfare 13
Bill Giehos

Jon Page
Michael Carr 10

For a second year in a row, the Class leaderboard finished the year with each class won by a
different member. Congratulations to all:-

It’s been a couple of years now that we’ve been running these revised classes, and I believe that they
have been working well. So in the absence of any alternative suggestions, I propose to maintain
these classes for the 2022 season.
Modeller Of The Year Competition

So totaling the points awarded to the members across all 15 competitions, the points table finished
with the top 5 as follows:-
Modeller Points
1st Ben Wellfare 183
2nd Steve Turner 130
3rd Geoff Woods 105
4th Martin Bishop 101
5th Michael Carr 97

Many congratulations Ben. You’ve provided us with a wonderful collection of tanks over the year,
with such lovely attention to detail. We look forward to seeing what you make in 2022.

Model Of The Year Competition

Although there were 15 competitions 20 models qualified, because in four months we had ties for first
place. After votes were cast at the AGM and the scores added up, the top 5 were as follows:-

Modeller Model Points

1st Kev Baxter F-4-EJ Phantom 27
2nd Ian Succamore Duke of Wellington 25
3rd Martin Bishop S-100 21
4th Dom Stevenson Phantom 10
5th Ben Wellfare Cromwell 8

Many, many congratulations to Kev. And as winner of ‘MOTY’ we would be delighted if Mr.Baxter will
take his Japanese Phantom to represent the club in the Branch Competition at Scale Model World
Telford in November.

2022 Theme Competitions

For this forthcoming year, the theme competitions are going to be as follows:-
• June: “Falklands at 40” - Remembering the conflict in the South Atlantic four decades ago.
• September: “It’ll be all White on the Night” - Continuing the theme of colour that we’ve had
for the last several years, any model painted white, with white in its name, or some other
connection to the colour white.
• December: “Secret Santa” - 11 members exchanged gifts at the December 2021 Meeting,
and we look forward to seeing them back in eleven months’ time.

So all that is left for me to do is to thank you all for your efforts in the models that you bring to the
table every month. And also particular thanks to Steve Baldwin for dusting off his CompSec
expertise and subbing for me on club nights when I’ve been otherwise engaged. Here’s to a
successful and safe 2022.
