How to Use a Rotary Laser Level

A rotary laser level is a tool used measure levels of grade ranging from ground level to the peak of a wall
or surface. The primary use of this laser is to find where surfaces are level. The rotary laser sits on an
adjustable tripod, connecting to the receiver which connects to a staff, will set a reference point. The
laser beam spins in a full 360-degree rotation on both a horizontal and vertical plane. This level can
accurately measure down to +/- 1/16” and can be adjusted to +/- 1/8” ranging from 50 to 100+ feet
between the laser and receiver. This is a very convenient tool for both indoor and outdoor projects.
These steps will explain how to use a rotary laser level.

Tools and materials needed:

• Rotary laser and tripod

• Receiver and staff
• Ground or surface to measure

Parts to a Rotary Laser Level
Wear eye protection! Direct eye exposure to laser beam may result in injury or loss of sight!

Do not move or bump when in use! Doing so may result in loss of calibration and recalibration will be
needed for accurate level measurements.

Keep laser in open sight of receiver! Failure to do so may result in false or no reading.

1. Remove rotary laser level and receiver from protective carrying case.
2. Remove adjustable tripod and adjustable staff from protective carrying case.
3. Connect laser to tripod.
4. Connect receiver to staff.
5. Place laser/tripod in a central open surface on the worksite with laser eye higher (one or two
feet) than all surfaces being leveled.
6. Adjust tripod to make the laser as level as possible.
7. Turn on laser. (Note: Laser beam will activate and quickly start spinning in 360-degree motion. If
this does not happen check or replace batteries).
8. Turn on receiver.
9. Find starting reference point on worksite using the bottom of staff as top of reference point.
10. Adjust staff/receiver to desired height or until a positive level is indicated on the receiver. (Note:
This will indicate when the receiver eye is level with the laser with a steady “beep.” Faster or
slower beeps will indicate if receiver is too high or low. Receiver eye must always face towards
laser/tripod).
11. Place marker at first reference point indicating the starting point for following measurements.
12. Go to next leveling point and place bottom of staff. (Not adjusting receiver but lifting receiver
and staff up or down until positive level is indicted on receiver). Then place marker when point
is successfully level with starting reference point.
13. Continue step 12 until all desired points have been marked level with the staring reference
point.
14. Check all leveling points confirming a positive level indication on all points.
15. Disassemble the rotary laser from tripod and the receiver from staff.
16. Place each piece in designated space in protective carrying case and close.

The rotary laser level is great for setting grade when digging or setting a precise level to multiple areas
on a jobsite. You can find a rotary laser level on jobsites of excavation, where concrete is going to be
poured, or other jobsites where precise leveling over distance is needed. Be sure to follow instructions
carefully when in use for successful precision leveling.
