Game Art and Design

Portfolio I GAD

Required Material for Graduation

Each Graduating student must complete the following criteria for Portfolio Presentation:

1) A printed Resume and Business Card for your table/booth for Portfolio Show.
2) A Exit Interview with Career Services before Week 8 of graduating Quarter.
3) A 5-10 page paper on your specialized interest, the research on the current job market, your creative process, and your
career plans once you graduate. Arrange to meet with Erin Mahaffey-Lowe, emahaffey-lowe@aii.edu to review this paper
during your graduating quarter. Sign off approval required by Erin Mahaffey-Lowe.
4) A Website that displays your Portfolio / Demo Reel for the Portfolio Show.

Motion based disciplines (Animation, Technical Director (TD), UI, etc ..) must also complete a Demo Reel for
Portfolio Presentation:

A Demo Reel must be created that is specialized toward desired entry level position with a minimum of 1:00 minute and
should not exceed past 3:00 minutes.

Things to include in your Demo Reel, No Exceptions:


1. A splash screen of the Art Institute of Raleigh-Durham logo, provided by instructor.
2. A three to five second motion graphics intro with your name and specialized interest, Environment Artist, Character
Modeler, etc.
3. End credits with software used and credit to other artist that helped in the making of your demo reel. Example,
someone that created the Rigged character you used to create your animations.

** Note: You must make plans to provide your own equipment for Portfolio Show. **

Specialized Portfolio Requirements:


Below are the general guidelines that you should aim for.
These guidelines can be modified according to the Portfolio Instructor on a student by student basis depending on student’s area of
focus, and work provided by student for evaluation during GAD3323 Portfolio I GAD.

Environment Artist Portfolio


1 fully modeled, textured, and lit environment inside Unity or Unreal 4, showing your entire creative process from start to finish.
You must demonstrate your ability to use Diffuse, Specular, Normal, Occlusion, and Alpha Maps where applied.
These Maps must be displayed in your reel.
You must demonstrate your ability to create proper UV layouts for your models. These Maps must be displayed in your reel.
5 additional prop models that are unrelated to the environment above. These props must be theme related, textured, lit, and
showcased in a 360 camera turnaround.

Character Artist Portfolio


3 fully modeled characters, textured, lit and high quality rendered from multiple angles
 1 Biped Character
 1 Quadruped / Animal
 1 Creature
You must demonstrate your ability to create 3 unique characters Feature Animation or Feature Film.
You must demonstrate your ability to create high-resolution models with high-resolution textures / surfacing. You must display the
character through images by showing the topology with a wireframe, the silhouette with Ambient Occlusion, and full color with a
high quality render.
All characters must be your own original concept, or based off someone else’s original concept. Artist name must be given in credits
if using someone else’s concept art.
Each character must be placed on platform/pedestal resembling a small section of an environment they would exist in. Each
character will be show through a series of high quality rendered images and/or setup for interactive viewing like Marmoset.
Throughout your high quality rendered images you must display a wireframe, specular map, normal map and full color with a high
quality render.

Animation Portfolio
All animations need to be fully rendered with proper three-point lighting setup (3D animation).
1 eleven second voice-over animation with complete scene. This includes both foreground and background elements.
1 thirty second obstacle course animation.
1 character interaction animation.
5 game loop animations. (walk cycle, run cycle, idle cycle, attack cycle, jump cycle)
You must demonstrate the ability to tell a story through animation.
You must demonstrate the ability to create fluid animation using the principles of animation where applied.
You must be able to create believable living characters through animation

Technical Director (TD) Portfolio


2 fully rigged characters showcasing character controls using screen capture software. (Camtasia)
 1 Biped Character
 1 Quadruped / Animal
 1 Small Mechanical (drone, gun, etc..)
One small prototype game using Unity 3D showcasing an understanding of game logic and programming languages.
1 procedural task using Mel script, Python or C#. Must be original in concept, no tutorials for this project.

UI Designer Portfolio
Personal portfolio site showcasing a variety of user interface designs including insights into your design process.
Provide effective UX design documentation and visual/interactive specifications for engineering implementation.
5 Flow charts displaying menu actions.
5 2D sprite animations.
5 Theme related skins for Icons and Buttons.
1 Mobile UI Prototype in Unity 3D.
1 Unreal 4 UI Prototype.
