A DETAILED LESSON PLAN

Grade 6 Science
I. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the learning session, students will be able to:
1. Explain what vertebrates are.
2. Classify animals by whether or not they have a backbone.
3. Categorize vertebrates as fishes, amphibian reptiles, birds or mammals.

A. Content Standards
The various features of vertebrates (Curriculum Guide) (2020)

B. Performance Standards
1. Make a list of the vertebrates that are commonly seen in the area.
[ Curriculum Guide (2020)]

C. Learning Competencies [ Curriculum Guide (2020)]

The learners should be able to:
 Determine the different aspects of vertebrates. (S6MT-IIe-f-3).

II. CONTENT
Topic: The Vertebrates
Subtopic: Components of an ecosystem

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References
Science Beyond Borders 6, pp 93-99
Curriculum Guide 2020 week 4-5 (S6MT-IIe-f-3)

B. Instructional Materials
Pictures, visual aids, Chairs, bond paper, ball pen.

IV. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

Preliminaries
1. Greetings/Prayer
2. Checking of Classroom Atmosphere
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Checking of Assignment
Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity
A. Recall
Okay, class, we talked about your favorite Student 1. Dog (Wu ju)
animals or pets yesterday; tell me again, what Student 2. Cat (Wu ba)
animals do you have? What are their names, if Student 3. Rabbit (Rabba)
they have them? Student 5. Pig (Bek-bek)
(the teacher call a student)

Okay very good.

B. Motivation

Class, divide yourselves into five groups. Then,

look for your groupmates. There are chairs on
the side; discuss which chair you will want as a
group. Please take the paper behind the chair
and read it aloud.
1. Bird
(Read after the game) 2. Fish
3. Mammals
4. Reptiles
5. Amphibians

Ok very good class. You may now take a sit.

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Do you have any clue what we're going to learn

today, class?
It's all about vertebrates, ma’am.
Ok very good!

What is vertebrate’s class?

A vertebrate is an animal with a spinal cord
(Ok let us read) surrounded by cartilage or bone. It includes
fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and
mammals.

So, the animals you have in your home are

known as vertebrates.

Class looks at this picture in a chart this are

classify as fish, amphibians, reptile’s birds and
mammals.
Fish Fish - are vertebrates that live in water.

(Everyone read) Salmon

Tilapia
Bangus (milk fish)
Shark
Lamprey

Amphibians
(Everyone please read) Amphibians means “double lives” which
alludes the ability to live on both land and
water, they are also cooled blooded animals.
Around 400 million years ago, amphibians
were the first creatures to leave the sea and
dwell on land.

How long they live in water and land?

400 million years

Ok very good!
Example. w/ picture

Frog
Toads
Salamanders

Reptiles Reptiles – are cold- blooded animals, they

(Everyone please read) can also live both water and land, but they
are more adapted and can live on land for
long periods of time because they have
better lungs and stronger legs. Reptile’s
body are covered with dry skin and hard
scales.

Example. w/picture
Turtle
Snake
Alligators
crocodiles

Birds
(Everyone please read)
Birds – are warm-blooded animals. They
remain active in cold and warm climates. A
bird’s bones are different from those of
most animals. They are hollow, and have a
honey comb structure, which makes them
strong but light.

Example. w/ picture

Parrot
Pigeon
Most birds can’t fly this is because they have Eagle
heavy bodies. Wood pecker

Birds can’t fly like:

Penguin
Kiwi
Chicken

Mammals

(Everyone read)
Mammals are warm-blooded animals. They
are the only group of animals with
mammary glands which produce milk. For
most mammals, the young develop inside
the female’s body.

Example. w/picture

Cat
Monkey
Ok class we have a game challenge Dog
The teacher will say a name of animals and tell Pig
if the animals are Fish, Amphibian, Reptiles, Goat
birds and mammals Carabao

Are you ready class? Yes ma’am.

1. Frog
2. Snake
3. Parrot Yes ma’am.
4. Tilapia
5. Cat Answer; amphibian
Answer; reptiles
Answer: Bird
Ok again Very good class. Answer: fish
Answer: mammals
D. Discussion

Pre-Activity
Class I will group you into three this row is
group 1 group 2 and group 3.

2. Activity Proper
Science skills: Observing, Comparing
Time frame: 10 minutes
Each group will classify the vertebrates in the
pictures I gave, observe and explain what is
different among others.
The teachers will give all the necessary Group 1
materials they need and prepared for group Name of vertebrates: Bangus (mik fish)
activity. Classification: fish
Type of skin: bony skin
Guide question: Different among other vertebrates:
Name of animals:
Classification: Group 2
Type of skin: Name of vertebrates: monkey
Different among other vertebrates. Classification: mammals
Type of skin: hairy skin
Different among other vertebrates:
Group 3
Rubrics Excellent Good Fair
Name of vertebrates: snake
25pts 20pts 10pts Classification: reptiles
Classify Correct Explain Explain Type of skin: dry skin and scales
vertebrates explanatio well well Different among other vertebrates:
n But not
And group all will
work perform
.

3. Post-Activity
The student will participate on group activity,
after they collaborate in his/her idea the student
will present their outputs, in front of the class

Culminating activity
E. Valuing
The students will learn to love the animals
around them by showing and explaining the
different types of animals that they have their
own abilities and uniqueness.

F. Application
1.Again what is the importance of animals in
our everyday living?
The teacher will call a student. Pupils 1To balance our ecosystem.
Ok very good
What else?
Pupils 2. To have a pet at home.
2. If you choose one of the classification of
vertebrates which is fish, amphibian, birds,
reptiles and mammals, what would it be? And Pupils 1. Mammals
why? Because they grew a baby on his
own.

Pupils 2. Bird
Because I want to fly like a bird.
G. Generalization
Again, class vertebrates are animals.
Vertebrates are those animals that has
backbones like fish, mammals, reptiles,
amphibian and birds.

V. Evaluation

In ¼ sheet of paper, Identify the vertebrates

that is being described by the statement.
Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Bird, Mammal
1. __________Its body is covered with Answer
moist and slimy skin 1. Amphibians
2. __________Its bones are lightweight 2. Birds
and hollow. 3. Fish
3. __________Its skeleton is either 4. Reptiles
cartilaginous or bony 5. Mammals
4. __________Its body is covered with dry
skin and scales.
5. __________It nourishes its young with
milk from the mammary glands

V I. Assignment

Compare and contrast the following vertebrates.

1. Shark and dolphin
2. Duck and duck-billed platypus
3. Eagle and ostrich
4. Frog and toad
5. Dog and kangaroo
