General Letter To Prospective Student January 2022

1 My timeslots cater for all my students, and take into consideration those who:-
who:
go out to work;
are at school/college/university;
are at home taking care of families; or
are on pension.
The student would therefore give me an indication as to his/her availability and I would
then try and allocate to him/her a day/timeslot which suits his/her needs. I however, do
not teach on a Monday or Sunday, as Monday is my admin day and Sunday, my family fami
day. My last lesson for the day (Tues – Friday) is from 4pm to 5pm. Saturday slots are
only reserved if it is a genuine thing that a student cannot attend during the week due to
work commitments etc. I do not split up lessonlessons
s into 30 minutes each either,
eithe as this
serves the student no real purpose theoretically nor practically in my experience.
2 For those students who have no musical knowledge whatsoever and don’t wish to
go the route of learning to read notes but instead, just wish to learn how to play
pla the
piano by ear or by way of lyrics and chords, this option is available too and is also
the most popular. If the student however wishes to further on down the line learn
to read notes, this can quite easily be incorporated into the lesson.
4 Insofar as the genres/pieces are concerned, once again, the student chooses what
he/she wishes
ishes to learn. Whatever the student wishes to learn, that is what I will
teach him/her. However, please note that I do not teach hip
hip-hop,
hop, rap, kwaito or
reggae.

5 My fee is R200 per hour (which I am told is way below that being charged by other
othe
teachers and the schools) when re regard
gard is had to exactly what all the student
receives during each session.
6 The duration of the lessons is dependent upon what each student wants with a
minimum required of 1 hour per week. If a student wishes to have 2 consecutive
hours on any particular day, he/she may have same. I would prefer that a student
has the minimum of 1 hour per week though as anything shorter would not serve the
student adequately.
7 As the lessons take place in my home via a reservation and would appreciate thattha
each student attends his/her lesson on time, in order to avoid any unnecessary
hiccups in timeslots for other students. There is ample parking for students’
student vehicles
immediately in front
ront of the premises’ drive
drive-way gates.
8 Learning to play the piano does not take months as other teach
teachers
ers love to make one
believe. I have taughtt a 72 year old gentleman with a PhD in Civil Engineering to
play his
is favourite tunes in 3 lessons by way of lyrics and chords and pretty pictures
which he insisted on drawing by way of association to certain instructions by me. He
had no priorr musical experience. Another student, also over 50 years of age, has
been with me for 2 months and already has 36 songs under his belt i.e. playing pl
chords in both hands and a little bit of melody as well. He is now learning to read
notes and after 1 lesson
sson already knows where each note is. I have a young boy of 5
years of age. He has been with me for 4 lessons and already plays little tunes with 2
fingers by using my method of teaching, bearing in mind he e can’t count yet nor write
his name nor read. I even have a Hindu lady with no experience but already 7 songs
to her name after 6 lessons. So I guess at the end of the day, it would depend upon
how passionate to learn someone is, my patience as a teacher (which is limitless)
and the method used.
9 I also insist that my students pay upfront and monthly in advance for the month’s
lessons, as I find that this prevents most students from treating my studio as a
MacDonald’s drive-thru.
thru. If a student is unable to attend a scheduled lesson he/she
is to inform
m me as soon as possible so that I may forward his/her lesson material
via Whatsapp/Gmail to him/her in order for such student not to miss out on that
particular lesson. There are no make
make-up
up lessons so the onus is on the student to
attend his/her lessons..
If you wish to speak to me on an audio call from within Whatsapp for any further
information, or by way of a normal telephone call, please advise. My telephone number
is 066 5787 610.
Kind regards
