interest in promoting the

nities by working with the
international relief agency

Lutheran World Relief.

Fairmount Country Festival to Showcase
Old-Fashioned Family Fair

he 7th annual Fairmount Country
Festival will be held on Sunday,
June 5, 2011 from noon to 5 p.m. on
the grounds of the Fairmount Presbyterian
Church Community House located at 247
Old Turnpike Road (Route 517), Califon,
N.J. The place is just south of the border
between Morris and Hunterdon Counties.
Everyone is welcome to this fabulous, fam-

Lioness Club has been active in
supporting the Chester Food Pantry
by advertising the current needs of the
pantry and requesting donations of free
hams, turkeys, etcetera, offered by the
ShopRite supermarkets if certain spending
requirements were met. Again, our commu-
nity, Scout troops, individuals, local busi-
nesses, organizations, and many of the sur-
rounding communities participated in ful-
filling the needs. Our community and the
surrounding communities are a model for

Comes To The Aid of Those in Need
T
he Chester Lions Club has again
come to the aid of those in need. At
a recent Board of Directors meeting,
the Club voted to send $10,000 to
Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The area from
Tuscaloosa to Birmingham had been devas-
tated by a series of killer tornados. The
Northport Lions Club, Tuscaloosa, had
turned their meeting hall in a Methodist
church into an aid center for 100 families.
Residence not only lost their homes and
their belonging but also their jobs as the
storm ripped through the industrial area as
well.

the game that their teammates can learn
from,’’ Herman said. “They also take charge
in practice, making sure that the team is on
task and keeping us on schedule.
“All four have become important in on-
field communication on offense, defense
and in transition. They also are valuable in
providing insights during time-outs, half-
times, and post-game reflections. They lead
by example, with high energy and enthusi-
asm, and are very supportive of fellow
teammates.’’
It’s important to mention that each of the
captains also had considerable careers at
West Morris Central in other athletic
endeavors.
“Each had great success in other sports,’’
Herman said. “Maggie and Amy were mem-
bers of the field hockey team and Chrissy
was on the volleyball team. Carly was on
the soccer team and basketball team.
Their combined successes help create an
atmosphere beneficial to the spring season.
They know how to work hard and to work
together, playing for the team and not for
individual honors.’’

WNTI Summer Concert Series

Kicks Off in June
T
his June, WNTI will kick off its sum-
mer series with the first of four con-
certs beginning at 7 p.m. June 17,
2011, with performances by Citizens Band
Radio and Gandalf Murphy and the
Slambovian Circus of Dreams.
The concert series continues at 7 p.m.
July 29, 2011, with performances by Buzz
Universe, George Kilby Jr. and the Road
Dogs, and Boris Garcia. At 7 p.m. August
12, 2011, there will be performances by
Chaz DePaolo Blues Band and Commander
Cody.
Gates open at 6 p.m. for the Friday night
shows with music starting at 7 p.m.
On September 17, 2011, the performances
start with Golden Gup Happy Foot Party
from noon to 4 p.m. Also performing will be
Little Isidore and Ronnie Spector.
The concert series will be held at the
Knowlton Township Lions Club Pavilion,
which is located at Route 46 in Delaware,
N.J. All tickets cost $20. Children aged 12
and under are admitted free of charge with
an adult paid admission. Guests should bring
lawn chairs. There will be no outside cool-
ers/food/drink allowed and food vendors are
available on site.
“The WNTI team is very excited about
this concert series,” says Melanie Thiel,
WNTI Development Director. “We have a
lot of support from a lot of great people,
which should make this event a success!”
WNTI Summer Concert Series sponsors
have until May 27, 2011 to register to have
their names on stage banners. If a company
has $500 in sponsorship, this will guarantee
its business name on the stage banner. If
attendees have 10 tickets to each concert or
five on-air spots on WNTI the week of each
show stating they are a sponsor, they will
receive booth/vendor space to hand out
information about their business.

ence can participate in the Centenary’s
Summer Scholars Program, which is a co-
ed academic program for rising 7th through
12th grade students from July 10, 2011
through July 30, 2011. Students can choose
from a number of one-week courses:
Creative Writing, Fashion Design, Just
Dance, Veterinary Science, Television
Production, Forensic Science, Going Green,
Computer Programming & Game Design,
and more. All courses are taught by college
professors and knowledgeable instructors.
All activities are managed by highly trained
camp staff.
Day and residential options are offered.
Students living nearby can take advantage
of the academic programs and return home
in the evenings. Students traveling from
other states, or who enjoy the residential
experience, are welcome to board for one or
more sessions.
The Young Performers Workshop, hailed
by The Star Ledger as “a state treasure,” is
a professional musical theatre training pro-
gram for young people ages 8 through 18.
The five-week program runs July 11, 2011
to August 14, 2011 on the Centenary cam-

Thomas Edison - NJ & The World’s Famous Employer Who Wore A Lab Coat

T
homas Edison’s companies had made New Jersey a
Technological hub throughout the world. As an
employer, Edison did not only attract the best from
the local area, he had attracted the best new hires from
across the globe. Getting acceptance as a manager in his
company had world renowned prestige. It was a coveted
credential to have on your resume. Some very famous peo-
ple in their own right were on Edison’s company payroll.
Names such as: Henry Ford, Nikola Tesla, and Kunihiko
Iwadare (famous Japanese industrialist) got a pay check
from Thomas Edison.
Since working for Thomas Edison had such enormous
appeal, too many determined job seekers would rush in to
put in their job applications for just one opening. Edison
needed some secrecy in posting his job ads to control get-
ting bombarded with applications. His best defense was to
place a blind classified ad in The New York Times. This
allowed him to filter out only the most promising candi-
dates and discard the rest without notice.
Here is an ad Edison placed in The New York Times
classifieds on February 24, 1921. It appeared on page 18 in
the “Help Wanted–Male” section:

Kumar, ran Café India in Morristown for five years but then
turned it over to their cousin so they could open a restaurant
closer to their regular customers.
“Lots of customers in Hackettstown, Long Valley,
Chester and Mt. Olive…they’d used to come to
Morristown; they say we have nothing around here but
pizza and Chinese,” explains Sanjeev. “They said
Morristown was too far to come so much.”
Now these customers can travel less and come more
often to enjoy the fine Indian cuisine, while the restaurant
can attract new customers who are also becoming fast reg-
ulars. Some come three times per week.
“It’s very authentic,” says Paul Verona of Chester, who
was dining with his wife Valerie and son Paul Jr. for the
fourth time at Taste of India. “The food is really good tradi-
tional Indian food. I like how the wait-staff helps you
choose your meal. They describe the dishes. Every dish has
a different spice. We’re anxious to bring our friends here.”
Paul Verona, Jr., who has tried all types of cuisine espe-
cially after living in Italy from 2009-2010, calls Taste of
India “a hidden treasure” or “hidden gem.”
“I’m into different flavors. Indian cuisine gives you all
different spices, so many varieties of flavors in one dish,”
he says. He tried the Vegetable Jal Frazie- fresh garden veg-
etables marinated in fresh ginger and garlic- and describes
it as “wholesome, exotic goodness and spicy too. I love
spicy cuisine that brings up the heat.”
Valerie Verona enjoyed the Lamb Pasanda- tender lamb
marinated overnight and simmered in a light sauce with
yogurt, onions, tomatoes and mild spices. “That was deli-
cious,” she says. “I love the lentils. I always get something
different and everything is always good. For this area, it’s
very different.”
Opened six days a week and closed on Mondays, Taste
of India has lines out the door on the weekends for cus-
tomers just waiting to experience wonderful dining. Lunch
is served 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. weekdays, and 12-3 p.m. on
weekends. Dinner is served 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Tues.-Sun.
For lunches, customers can enjoy “the best buffet in
town,” describes Sanjeev, in which everyday is a new menu
served from mild to medium. Ten main courses, two to
three desserts, appetizers and salads are included in the buf-
fet for $9.95 on weekdays and $10.95 weekends

free. Whether it is lamb, chicken, shrimp,
salmon, vegetables, or tandoors (kebobs
marinated in a yogurt based sauce with gin-
ger for ultimate marination then cooked in
the charcoal clay oven) the choices are end-
less. What is also nice is customers can
choose their degree of spiciness in every
dish from mild, mild to medium, medium,
medium to hot, hot, and Indian hot.
“Romantic, quiet and enjoyable,” Taste
of India provides a reader-friendly menu
with the proper lingo for each dish and then
a description of ingredients, very helpful for
newcomers. The staff is also very helpful
and patient describing dishes, making rec-
ommendations and accommodating to the
customers.
While viewing the menu, customers can
relax under dim light, listen to Hindi instru-
mental music and enjoy a Lassi, refreshing
homemade yogurt drinks flavored with
rosewater or mango, and munch on compli-
mentary Papdum, thin and crispy flat bread
served with chopped tomato and onion. No
alcohol is served on the premises but cus-
tomers are welcome to bring their own.
WIFI is also available.
A variety of appetizers, soups and breads
are offered with the first course. The
Vegetarian Assorted Appetizers for Two
offers a healthy variety of fried vegetables
such as cauliflower; spinach, onion and
potatoes; potato puffs with peas.
Sanjeev claims that Taste of India offers
the “best chicken marsala.” The popular
dish is served in many Italian restaurants.

“It excites the taste buds,” Paul Verona
says about the Chicken Tikka Masala.
Other popular main dishes include

Shrimp Tandoori, Lamb Kabob, Roasted
Eggplant, Okra, Chicken or Lamb

The Shrimp Curry is tender and fresh,
like right out of the water fresh, served in a
light sauce made with spices that linger in
your mouth.
“We make all of our own sauces,” says
Sanjeev, like chili garlic sauce, and all
homemade breads like Garlic Naan, a flat
white bread topped with fresh chopped gar-
lic with spices cooked in the tandoor, and
stuffed breads with onion and cheese, onion
and cauliflower, chicken or lamb.
According to studies, spices used in
north Indian cuisine are very healthy.
Turmeric, a spice used in many of the foods
at Taste of India, has shown to be beneficial
in the treatment of many different health
conditions from cancer to Alzheimer’s dis-
ease.
Capzasin and curry is also used in vari-
ous dishes and helps to build the immune
system. Black Cardamom spice is used in
the yellow rice and helps indigestion,
according to studies.
“It’s very good for your body,” says
Sanjeev.

American Dream.
New Jersey Nightmare

anadu. You know, the original one
in China from way back, was the
place where Kubla Khan had his
summer palace. It was a really nice palace.
The place is now in ruins. Too bad. But
when it comes to our Xanadu, you know, the
incredibly ugly wart in the middle of the
Meadowlands, we’re not so lucky. It’s still
there.
Few objects encompass so much of New
Jersey’s dysfunctionality than does that
Xanadu “thing.” Whatever you do, do not
call it a mall. We’re not supposed to call it a
mall. G-d knows there are more than
enough malls in New Jersey, in Bergen
County in particular. Oh no, this was going
to be a “destination.” A must-go-to-place.
And because it was so important, New
Jersey rained down hundreds of millions of
dollars in public subsidies to the developer.
Then to the next developer. Then to the
developer after that. And then, well yea,
then to the next developer. It’s been quite a
show.
Xanadu has been universally scorned,
and not just for being ugly. The entire con-
cept of some mishmash of shopping mall,
“entertainment” (whatever that’s supposed
to mean) and “sports” (read: indoor sky
slope – like that’s going to get a lot of use),
has been panned, panned, panned. If you’ve
followed the dreary drama since the bright
idea was first announced in 2003, you know
that there hasn’t exactly been a stampede of
people looking to get in on this thing. Talk
about white elephants. But now, brace your-
selves. If you think it was bad before, it
may have just gotten a whole lot worse.
Some big thinking Canadians want to have a
whack at it. A big whack.
Out with Xanadu. In with “American
Dream.” If the new developer gets its way,
we’re going to get a mall about three times
bigger than the original plan. Seven and one
half million square feet of mall, dwarfing
anything else in the entire state. Well, to the
developer this might be a dream but to the
rest of us, all of us in New Jersey, this is a
nightmare.
You know that thing about real estate?
Location, location, location. The
Meadowlands is an ecologically vital area.
It’s a lousy spot to plunk down a huge mall.
Transportation routes, roads and trains, do
run through the area but that’s understand-
able, and livable. However, any large scale
development in this area has always been,
always, needless at best and downright
harmful at worst. But even if we set aside
the ecological importance and fragility of
the area, it is clear to everyone that Bergen
County already has more than its share of
malls. C’mon, if you were going to build a
new mall, would you build it there?
So why do I care of this? Why should
you? Because, let alone how inappropriate
the development is, especially in that loca-
tion, we have a governor who is not only
pushing this monstrosity on us (they may
get rid of the ugly façade on the place but
it’s still going to be a monstrosity), he’s
using public money, a whole lot of public
money, to make it happen. Governor
Christie has given away at least another two
hundred million of our tax dollars on this.
Let’s remember, Christie is a “Republican.”
You know, self proclaimed champion of pri-
vate enterprise, small government, and
“lowering your taxes.” Unfortunately, as he
has shown us so often, as he continues to
show us just about every day, Christie’s
words (usually bombastic) don’t quite
square with his actions.
Private enterprise? Well, if this
“American Dream” was really such a
dream, private developers would put up all
the money needed. Small Government? No
matter what the locals may want, no matter
even what the owners of other nearby malls
may want, Christie is using the power of
state government to push through a private
development. Let’s be clear. If this thing
works, the profits won’t be going to New
Jersey. This isn’t a public mall we’re talk-
ing about. Lowering your taxes? Hundreds
of millions of dollars in public subsidies,
over and above the hundreds of millions of
dollars already lavished on the place, means
somebody is going to have to pay for it.
Think about that as you look at your state
tax bill.
Not too long ago, Christie killed the ARC
tunnel that was to be built between New
Jersey and New York, an absolutely vital
part of our infrastructure investment in our
state’s future. While the tunnel plan had its
problems, both in design and financing, it
was clear to all the non-political profession-

K-8 BOE return $380,000 to the
tax payer as promised in this year's budget?
Did the BOE use an accounting trick, pull a
bait and switch to get you to vote for the
school budget and not return the money? In
February 2011 the preliminary budget was
less than 1% increase on property taxes
according to the BOE's presentation on their
website(wtschools.org). The budget was
down about $116,000 dollars at that point.
The budget finished down $212,000 after
the final changes. That's $96,000 less, plus
$380,000 put to tax relief for total of
$476,000. The BOE asked for and got
about 30 million in the tax levy. The
$476,000 represents about a 1 ?% of the $30
million. So, why did property taxes go up?
Property taxes should have stayed flat or
went down.
Washington Twp Committeeman Jim
Harmon, did not file for reelection for the
Twp. committee. Jim has decided to spend
more time with his family. Jim has been an
excellent committeeman, like Howard
Popper, Jim the Vice Mayor, served many
long unpaid hours every week on various
committees for our community. Thank you
Jim & Margaret. Running in Jim's place, is
27 year veteran of the township committee
Tracy Tobin. Mr. Tobin had resigned a cou-
ple of years ago to spend time with his son,
who was ill with a brain tumor and later
passed away. Challenging Tray Tobin in the
Republican primary on Tuesday June 7th is
an unknown newcomer to the political
arena, Chris Henwood of Bently Dr.
You may recall, Chris Henwood wrote a
letter to the editor of the Observer-Tribune
back in February supporting Democrat
Chairwoman Sally Hudson's harsh criticism
of the Township committee's handling of
the engineer's fees. Mr. Henwood was
defending Committeeman Dave Kennedy's
objection to the township engineer's hourly
wage. Committeeman Kennedy's first act in
office was to use his new position on the
committee to punish the engineer for rea-
son's pertaining to encroachment and con-
struction problems in Mr. Kennedy's devel-
opment on Sunset Lane.
Committeeman Kennedy is in violation
of encroaching on a conservation easement
by cutting down over a half acre of trees in
his back yard. Kennedy will have to recuse
himself from any planning board meetings
representing the township committee when
the issue of encroachments on the conserva-
tion easement is taken by the planning
board. This will be the first in a series of
conflicts the town will have to put up with
concerning committeeman Kennedy
because of his affiliation with police unions.
There's an expectation on the part of uni-
formed personal that Mr. Kennedy will give
away the store when it comes to future con-
tract negotiations and new equipment. If
elected, Chris Henwood would be just a
rubber stamp for Dave Kennedy's union
agenda. Kennedy on a pension of over
100K as retired Captain of the Roxbury
police dept. sees your tax dollar as an end-
less, bottom less well.
The danger in having Dave Kennedy
lead in representing the taxpayer in a union
contract negotiation is that the cap can eas-
ily be exceeded by back loading a contract
with benefits that increase in the later years
of the contract. Keep in mind, the NJ state
legislature has not passed any of the propos-
als in Governor Christie's tool kit to keep
property taxes down. The key piece of this
legislation is to hold back unions give-
aways, Governor Christie is still in battle
mode with the unions.. That's why it is
important to elect Tracy Tobin in the pri-
mary. Mr. Tobin is well aware of the issues
that effect the 2% cap. Rumor has it that Mr.
Kennedy has his eye on Sheriff Ed
Rochford's job should Ed decide to retire.
Mr. Kennedy bashed Washington Twp.
Republicans and sided with Democrats in
his bid for Township committee, has been
showing up at Republican fundraisers and
writing checks.
The other situation that taxpayers don't
want to see is a township committee stacked
with Dave Kennedy and K-8 BOE sympa-
thizers. If future school budgets were to fail,
a township committee with school board
sympathizers would not cut any money out
of it, they might ad money to the school
budget instead. This issue is important
because of decreasing enrollment in our
schools. Hopefully sooner, rather than later,
the BOE must deal with this issue by
shrinking it's budget.

message boards is BOE member Chance
Healy, RINO Republican, the new Kevin
Nedd, who recently wrote to yours truly on
April 19 : Tom- Your "Ready, Fire, Aim"
strategy to commentary is mind-numbingly
shallow and misleading. If you ventured out
of your cocoon of fellow washed up, tired,
Reagan-worshiping Washington Township
Republicans, you'd see there are outstand-
ing, energetic, high-integrity, Conservative
-principled people willing to lead. Why
don't you actually try and get to know any
of our fellow Republican candidates before
you comment?" Respectfully, Chance

April 20th and have heard nothing so far. I
fail to see how any person can call them-
selves a conservative and bash Ronald
Reagan. If any one wonders why the nation-
al Republican party is in a mess, this is the

Republicans dot the landscape. Many peo-
ple have bought into the idea that free stuff
from government has become a civil right.
In the case of local RINO Republicans, they
get bought off for free stuff for their kids in
school and vote yes for the school budget.

after school sports.
