CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

The purpose of teaching English at school is to develop the students’
language skills, English has four basic language skills. They listening, speaking,
writing and reading. The four basic English languages cannot be separated because
they are related to one another.
Speaking is the skill which must produce sentence or utterance in the oral
mode. Different from the other skills, it is more difficult than the other, because it
is more than just pronouncing words (Bashir, 2011, p. 38).
In college speaking classes, generally, students will learn about how to
speak properly and according to correct grammar, to develop their English speaking
skills. There are also ways that students can do such as remembering English
vocabulary or imitating a stranger's words or from a western film that can be
downloaded on the internet. According to (Utama et al, 2013) There are two aspects
to be success in the speaking skill; linguistics aspect and non-linguistic aspect.
Grammar, word order, pronounciation, comprehension of utterance, vocabulary,
and fluency are the linguistic aspect, And non-linguistics aspect involves persolity
dimension, such as self-esteem, extroversion, motivation, intergroup climate, and
self-confidence.
Self-confidence is one of the factors which play the importan role in
determining the learners’ willingness to communicate of the speaking skill (Utama
et al, 2013 and Dornyei et al as cited in Park & Lee, n.d.)
According to (Putri, 2018) In speaking English, students have 2 obstacles:
1.) Psychological factors, in this case, students still have low self-confidence in
speaking in public. There is fear when making mistakes during dialogue. 2) The
grammar factor, in this case, students have mastery of most types of grammar which
is still low. Only able to say the type but unable to explain the meaning of the
grammar.
In communication play, self-confidence has an important role, exactly in
the learners’ willingness to communicate. Because that, self-confidence give an
effect to their abilities. High self-confidence can be positively correlated with oral
performance (Heyde as cited in Park, 2004, p. 198). Therefore, student who has
higher self-confidence than the other students can communicate well. So, they have
the speaking ability in English are better than the other students. That can be
supported by the statement that situational self-confidence in communication plays
an important role in determining the learners’ willingness to communicate. (Lee
and park, 2004, p. 206).
Even though students memorize a lot of English vocabulary but they have
problems in compiling or arranging these vocabulary words into structured
sentences while practicing speaking English, which makes them less fluent in
speaking English, which ultimately disturbs students' confidence when in speaking
class, This is in accordance with the research conducted by (Putri, 2018) with the
title "Factors Affecting the English Language Ability of Office Administration
Education Students" that there is fear when making mistakes during dialogue.

In line with this research, memorizing short sentences in English will help
students speak English without fear of errors in sentence structure because students
no longer need to compile a correct sentence, because they have memorized it,
thereby eliminating worry or not. students' confidence in the speaking class.

Short sentence memorization is also something students usually do to make

it easier to learn to speak their English, even though they don't realize it,
memorizing short sentence memorization can be obtained from anywhere from
watching western films, using the internet, or even from playing video games.
In a study that examined the effect of short sentence memorization on
speaking skills (Kitagaki, 2013, p. 3) states that English sentence memorization has
an effect on the enhancement of the speaking skill.

That is why the researcher chooses the title “The Correlation Between Short
