III. PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY PUPILS ACTIVITY

A. Motivation

Good morning class. Good morning ma’am.

How are you today? We are good ma’am.

Before we start our lesson, let us read together “ROUNDING”

the Poem entitled “Rounding” Underline the digit
Look next door.

If it is 5 or greater
Add one more.

If it is less than 5
Leave it for sure.

Everything after
Is a zero, not more

Based on the poem, what is the poem all

about?

The poem is all about Rounding

Yes, Mica

Very good.

B. REVIEW
As a sort of review, what was our lesson
yesterday?
(raising a handS)

PRESENTATION Yes ma’am

Today we will learn on how to round
numbers from 10’s, 100’s, and 1000’s.
Are you ready children?

OKAY LET’S BEGIN!

ROUNDING OFF TO THE NEAREST 10’s

Rounding can be done for every place value of
the number. To round off a number to the
nearest ten we round off to the nearest
multiple of ten.

Rules for Rounding off to the Nearest 10:

Rule 1. While rounding off to the nearest ten if

the digit in the units place is between 0-4 i.e., <
5 then the unit digit is replaced by 0.

Rule 2. If the digit in the units place is 5 to 9

i.e., > or 5 but < 10, then the units place is
replaced by 0 and tens place increased by 1.

Example I
4340
We see the digit in the ones place is 3, now
round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is
smaller than the number. Hence, 43 is nearer
to 40 than 50.

Example II
158 160
We see the digit in the ones place is 8, now
round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is
greater than the number. Hence, 158 is nearer
to 160 than 150.
Example III
35013500
We see the digit in the ones place is 1, now
round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is
smaller than the number. Hence, 3501 is
nearer to 3500 than 3510.

Example IV
10231020
We see the digit in the ones place is 3, now
round to the nearest multiple of 10 which is
smaller than the number. Hence, 1020 is
nearer to 1020 to 1030.

Example V
6275985 6275990
We see the digit in the ones place is 5

Rules for Rounding off to the Nearest 100

Rule 1: While rounding off to the nearest

hundred, if the digit in the tens place is
between 0-4 i.e. < 5, then the tens place is Yes ma’am
replaced by 0.
53
Rule 2: if the digit in the units place is equal to
or >5, then the tens place is replaced by 0 and 57
the hundreds place is increased by 1.

Examples in Rounding off to the Nearest 100
695
1. 142100
We see the digit in the tens place is 2, 450
we round to the nearest multiple of
hundred which is less than the
number. Hence, 142 is nearer to 100
than 200.

2. 486500
We see the digit in the tens place is 8,
we round to the nearest multiple of
hundred which is greater than the
number. Hence, 486 is nearer to 500
than 400.

3. 799800
Ma’am (raising a hand)
We see the digit in the tens place is 9,
we round to the nearest multiple of
hundred which is greater than the Look for the place of the digit to be

than 700.
Check the digit to it is 4 or below
4. 4387 4400 round it down.

hundred which is greater than the
number. Hence, 4387 is nearer to 4400
than 4300. Ma’am (raising a hand)

5. 950 1000 Change all the digits to the right of

We see the digit in the tens place is 5, the digit to be rounded off to 0.
we round to the nearest multiple of
hundred which is greater than the
number. Hence, 950 is nearer to 1000
than 900.

Rules for Rounding off to the Nearest 1000

Rule 1: while rounding off to the nearest

thousand, if the digit in the hundreds place is
between 0-4 i.e., < 5, then the hundreds place
is replaced by 0.

Rule 2: if the digit in the hundreds place is = to

or > 5, then the hundreds place is replaced by 0
and the thousands place is increased by 1.

Examples on Rounding off to the Nearest 1000.

1. 38464000
We see the digit in the hundred’s place
Is 8, we round to the nearest multiple
of thousand which is greater than the
number. Hence, 3846 is nearer to 4000
than 3000.

2. 8039 8000
We see the digit in the hundreds place
is 0, we round to the nearest multiple
of thousand which is smaller than the
number. Hence 8039 is nearer 8000
than 9000
3. 998510,000
We see the digit in the hundred’s place
is 9, we round to nearest multiple of
thousand which is greater than the
number. Hence, 9985 is nearer to
10,000 than 9000.
4. 3500 4000
We see the digit in the hundred’s place
is 5, we round to the nearest multiple
of thousand which is greater than the
number. Hence, 3500 is nearer to 4000
than 3000.
5. 16796 17000
We see the digit in the hundred’s place
is 7, we round to the nearest multiple
of thousand which is greater than the
number. Hence, 16796 is nearer to
17000 than 16000.

b. DISCUSSION

c. APPLICATION
Let’s have a game! “Can You Find Me”. Write

60?
3. What number can be rounded down
to8?
4. Which number can be rounded up to
700?
5. Which 3-digit number that can be
rounded down to 500?

Thank you children for participating the

game. Let’s clap ourselves for doing a great
job.
