4. Briefly describe about the Principle of Cathodic Protection. What are the 2 Types.
Cathodic protection is a secondary defence against corrosion.
When steel is exposes in the atmosphere during lowering, backfilling or flotsam
impact on an offshore platform leg.
Due to presence of electrolyte the corrosion process starts at the point of damage
area, but if the steel is was in cathode condition by applying current corrosion will
never occur.
Two types impressed current and sacrificial anodes.

Ensure that all personnel are conversant with

Permissible work conditions and safety
Considerations offshore.

25. What would a procedure test require for a contractor offshore?

contractor shall demonstrate by means of a coating procedure

test that the combination of surface preparation , spray
equipment, application technique and the quality control
procedure, produce a coating of the specified standard.

26. Which areas of an offshore platform would CP protect?

Platform structure.

27. How could the CP potential be measured offshore?

BGAS Grade-1 - MODEL EXAM No: 3

Specified, but which because of their location

Cannot be treated may be power tool cleaned
Subject to BGE & P approval.
30. Offshore, which documents and standards would you expect to find it in a site

31. Briefly describe 3 methods of applying metallization to a steel substrate.

Galvanizing, sheradising, calorising,
Anodizing, electro plating.

Galvanizing=
1, the components are chemically cleaned (acid) washed and fluxed.
2, totally immersed in a vessel containing molten zinc at around 450
degC.
3, when drawn out the zinc solidifies at a average thickness
approximately 100 microns.

Sheradising=
1, nuts and bolts and other similar are coated with this method, after
cleaning the components are tumbled in the powder zinc, impact and
fuses the zinc on to the components and in effect “ cold welds” the
powder on the metal.

Anodizing =
1, treatment for aluminum, anodizing is an electrolyte method of coating,
which result in the formation of a dense oxide.
2, the components is measured in a weak acid bath and oxidation is
induced electrically.
