Lab session 3
Title:
Performing general maintenance activities on various types of machines in
Machine Tools & Machining (MTM) laboratory.
Objective:
The objectives of this lab session are:

 To describe the assigned machine


 To enlist safety instructions for the assigned machine
 To explain system overview diagram
 To explain maintenance diagram

Assigned machine:
NC-Grinder
NC-Grinder:
NC grinder is a numerically controlled grinding machine that performs a variety of
grinding operations. A grinding machine, often shortened to grinder, is one of power
tools or machine tools used for grinding, it is a type of machining using an abrasive wheel as
the cutting tool. Each grain of abrasive on the wheel's surface cuts a small chip from the
workpiece via shear deformation.
Functions of NC grinder:
Grinding is used to:

1. Finish workpieces that must show high surface quality (e.g., low surface roughness)
2. High accuracy of shape and dimension.
Safety instructions for Using NC-Grinder machine:
Warnings:
1. Avoid operating the grinder at speeds above the manufacturer’s recommended limit.
2. Replace the wheel device if it is damaged.
3. Do not grind on side of wheel unless wheel is specifically designed for such use.
4. Special training is required before using the surface grinder
5. Abrasive wheel machinery shall not be operated without the appropriate guards in place
6. Hold work securely while grinding

Cautions:
1. Once the grinding process is complete, safely switch off the grinder and remove any
leftover swarf that is present inside the grinder.
2. Check the cabling to the CNC internal grinder before starting it to make sure there are
no loose or worn cables.
3. Carefully choose the wheel type before operating the grinder and make sure that it’s the
right size for your application.
4. Before operating the precision grinding machine, make sure the wheel does not have a
crack.
5. If a magnetic chuck is being used, on the surface grinder, make sure it is holding the
work securely before starting to grind.
Note:
 Always wear safety equipment and make sure you use the operator’s recommended
eyewear or safety goggles, Gloves, Safety Helmet, Ear plugs before operating the
grinding machine.

System (NC-Grinder) Overview Diagram:


The NC surface grinder is a surface grinding machine composed of several systems:
1. Mechanical system
2. Electrical system
3. Hydraulic system
Mechanical system:
Mechanical system of surface grinder composed of dust exhaust unit, coolant tank, and table
majorly future parts included the grinding wheel which is the tool controlled by a number of
servo motors and gears mechanisms, foundation on which the whole body is resting, bed on
which magnetic chuck rests and holds workpiece tightly.

Electrical System:
All mechanical systems are operated with help of some electrical systems composed of electrical
components listed in figure below.
The main electrical switchgear is housed in a compartment at the front of the machine. The
isolator is mounted on left hand side of the machine and must be switched to the OFF position
before attempting to remove the switch gear cover.

Explanation:
First of all machine is electrically turned on after that workpiece is carefully adjusted on
magnetic chuck for the required grinding or surface finish operations. After that grinding wheel
rotatory motion is turned ON and also the flow of coolant is turned ON. Handling wheels are
used to adjust the locations longitudinally & cross-feed hand wheel & operation in this way is
being carried out.
System (NC-Grinder) Maintenance Diagram:
Maintenance is the most necessary thing for a machine continuously using in work. Maintenance
of a machine involves visually inspection of a machine and all of its physical components and
then lubrication of the rusted parts, parts where a least friction is required for smooth process
flow and smooth continuous motion of moving parts.
Lubrication:
It is essential that lubrication of machine is systematically carried out at regular intervals.

Comments:
 After performing this lab session, we got a sound knowledge about the
precautions, Warnings and necessary notes to be understood and what they are,
before operating the machine
 Systematic diagrams of NC grinder were observed and it was learned how
different systems hydraulic, electrical systems helps in overall machine working.
 Maintenance diagrams related to the lubrication were studied and observed that
which parts required which type of lubricant and after how much duration of
lubrication become must at those certain points.
