PERFORMANCE TASK IN SCIENCE 7: PERFORMING AN

EXPERIMENT USING THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

EXPERIMENT TITLE: THE EFFECT OF COCA COLA, ROYAL AND

COFFEE DRINK TO THE TEETH
SCIENTIFIC METHOD:
1. Observation
 Our teeth turn darker because of the certain drinks that we intake or consume. As
a representative of the teeth in doing the experiment, eggshells are being used.
Eggshells have similar chemical composition to our tooth enamel, making them
react similarly with other chemicals. This can help us understand what stains
tooth enamel (https://www.deltadentalks.com>knowledge).

2. Questions:
 Which among the three drinks namely: Coca Cola, Royal, and Coffee Drink stains
the teeth quickly?

3. Hypothesis/Prediction
 Considering the color of the three drinks, Coca Cola drink stains the teeth most
quickly rather than Coffee and Royal.

4. Experiment
1. Prepare the materials that are needed in the experiment: 3 pieces egg, 3 plastic cups of
the same size, Coca Cola, Royal Coffee, Water, Tablespoon, Timer.
2. Pour 150 ml of Coca cola in the first cup, 150 ml of Royal in the second cup and 150
ml of coffee drink (contains 150 ml of water and 1 tablespoon of coffee powder) in
the third cup.
3. Put 1 piece of egg in each cup at the same time and soak for 30 minutes using the
timer.

5. Result Analysis
 From the experiment, the egg with the most visible stain is the one soaked in
Royal Drink followed by Coffee and Coca Cola respectively. This is because of
the content of the Royal Drink which is its artificial food coloring. The Coffee
Drink and Coca Cola also stained the eggs because of their content which is the
tannins that make the eggs appear darker
6. Conclusion
 In conclusion, Royal Drink stains the teeth more quickly compared to Coffee and
Coca Cola drinks because of its artificial food coloring. On the other hand,
Coffee and Coca Cola drinks also contain tannins that make the teeth appear
darker or yellowish over a certain period of time
