a) potential energy
Potential Energy is the energy possessed by an object by virtue of its position or state. It is stored energy that
can become kinetic energy. The measurement of potential energy in an object is calculated based on the
object’s mass and its height or distance. It is measured in Joules (J). As a result of vertical displacement, an
object will gain Potential Energy (PE). When work is done on an object, energy is transferred to it.
m
Thus, PE = mgh, where (g) is the acceleration due to gravity that’s equal to 9.8 .
s2
m
The unit of PE is N [kg ] x m or Nm or Joule (J)

Sample Problem 1.
A crane lifts a 75 kg mass a height of 8 m. Calculate the gravitational potential energy gained by the mass.
2
measurement of KE in an object is calculated based on the object’s mass and velocity. It is measured in Joules
(J). The work done in accelerating an object is equal to the kinetic energy gained by the object .

In mathematical term:
KE = ½ mv2 There are 2 factors that affects Kinetic Energy
where:
A cyclist and bike have a total mass of 100 kg and a speed of 15 m/s. Calculate the kinetic energy.
Solution:
A. kinetic energy
B. mass = 100 kg Velocity = 15 m/s
C. KE = ½ mv2
D. KE = ½ (100 kg)( 15 m/s)2
KE = (50 kg) (225 m2/s2)
E. KE = 11 250 kg m2/s2
KE = 11 250 J
Direction: Solve for the potential energy (PE) and kinetic energy of the object. Showing your complete solution.
