GRAMMAR

The Focus of This Lesson is Greetings for Different Times of Day

Selamat siang!
"Good afternoon!"

INDONESIANPOD101.COM ABSOLUTE BEGINNER S1 #5 - I LIVE IN JAKARTA, TOO! 3

Selamat siang is but one of a handful of greetings that are dependent on which time of day
we utter them. Other times of day that we incorporate into these greetings include pagi
("morning"), sore ("late afternoon"), and malam ("evening"). The way of reckoning general
time is slightly different from that of English (and other European languages).

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Indonesia's Sprawling Metropolis

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. A sprawling metropolis, it serves as the center of the
Indonesian government, as well as the main financial and business hub of the nation. It also
has a lot of problems typical of third-world metropolises such as staggering pollution,
seemingly random development, and abject poverty alongside luxury. However, there are still
a number of interesting sites for the tourist, from the various monuments dedicated to
Indonesian independence and nationhood, to the various museums, which cover Indonesia's
multi-colored and multi-cultural history.
