Raise Lift Method

Jora raise lift method is a method in which a cage is
suspended using a steel rope that can be hoisted up and
down using a winze.
This arrangement is also known as Jora hoist method

The cage has got a flat surface at its top which is used as

the working platform to carry out drilling and blasting

operations.
With the jack mounted in the sides, the cage can be fixed

against the raise sides.

hole.
Conditions ‒
1. Applicable to vertical to steeply incline length of 100m.
2. Per day progress 6-8m.

Method ‒
For driving raise, a pilot hole has to be drilled accurately at
the centre of the proposed raise. A winze for hoisting rope
at upper level and steel rope of the winze is suspended
through the pilot hole. work.
The lift is operated from inside the cage and can be
maneuvered precisely into optimum working position.
This system eliminates errors due to misunderstood signals,
as the rope hole serves the purpose of burn cut
A cage incorporating a hoisting winze forms an equipment at
lower level (Jora Raise Method) with such arrangements
cage moves like spider. A operator for the winze of the upper
level is not necessary since its drum is locked for certain
length of the suspended rope.
The cage can be stabilized by telescopic stabilizer. A hose
reel is provided for the hose of compressed air for inclined
raise, this is supplemented by the guide rail.
Advantages -
Driving of both vertical and incline raises at steep angle
up to 100m.
It is economical for short raises too, work of the
preparation is simple and inexpensive.
Jora lift puts an end to dangerous climbing and open
shaft
Raise Borers
Raise borers were first introduced in the mines of western
countries in 1962, and at present 300 raise borers are in use
throughout the world.
Method -
The method of raise drilling or raise boring consists essentially
of drilling a pilot hole, 230mm to 300mm diameter, between two
levels at the site of and in the direction of the proposed raise,
and then remaining pilot hole is reamed from upper. If the pilot
hole is reamed out from lower level to the upper level, i.e.
Upwards the method is called up-reaming.
The up-reaming method is commonly adopted. The rock
cuttings fall down from the face by gravity and the pilot
hole need not be of large diameter.
Down reaming method demands pilot hole of a larger
diameter to permit rock cuttings to pass through the hole in
the space between drill rod and the hole sides. Normally
diameter of most of the raises drilled varies from 1m -
3.7m as raise drill bits are available in these sizes , but
lined shaft of 5m diameter up to depth of 238m has also
been drilled by the raise boring method in a foreign
country.
Advantages ‒
Faster drilling and cost competitive.
Personnel are not exposed to hazards of
raise driving, inherent in drilling blasting
method.
Furnished section is smooth, offers less
resistance.
No support is required.
5. No explosive is required.
6. Raising cost per meter becomes less as length
increases.
Progress ‒
It is common to average between 100m and 150m of raise
per month. For small diameter holes, the penetration rate is
usually faster than for large diameter holes, but these small
holes normally are of short length and require more
machine moves from one hole to the next. For large
diameter holes, penetration rate is slower, and cutter
changes are required more frequently. However, the large
diameter holes tend to be of longer lengths and therefore,
require fewer machine moves from one location to another.
Thumb rule for the advance of pilot hole drilling
and reaming is as follows:
Pilot Hole drilling : 2-3m/hr.
Back Reaming : 1-1.5m/hr.
A raise drilling machine normally is operated by a
crew of two men, consisting of an operator and an
assistant.
