Single Loaded Corridor

• Normally used in low rise buildings

• Grid comes from its working space and structural needs.
• All circulation is open air but sheltered from sun and rain: all
rooms have cross ventilation. .
• The staircase maybe located at one or both end or at the
center of building .
• The maximum distance from one staircase to another
should be within 100.

and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios
Location : Basundhara R. A. , Dhaka

Cross circulation is ensured

Concept diagram
• The buildings are designed to breathe through traditional 'jali' screens and
windows: the architecture facilitates air movement.
• All circulation is open air but sheltered from sun and rain: all rooms have
cross ventilation.

PRINCIPAL ROOM
Precast concrete louvers and pattern
walls are used for an envelope of the
building. These shading devices
generate semi-outside space, these
open circumstances avoiding direct
sunlight as well as acting like a natural
ventilation system for the corridor
space.

Surrounding the two courtyards as a

geographical hill, lessens the aggressive
height between the building and the
peaceful site

The open space flows throughout the circulation to help

teachers and students enjoy various activities of the two
courtyards with rich natural surroundings.
this school has been borderless between the school activity
and surrounding nature and also not to destroy the current
abundant forest as much as possible. In this open school,
students enjoy their life learning the generous spirits of nature
All the classrooms are connected by this semi-open
space, where teachers and students chatting,
communicating and appreciating nature. We designed
the school as a continuous volume in order not to
disturb any school activities. This fluidity concept is
inspired by the endless raining of the typical tropical
climate, where raining season lasts from May to
November each year. This continuous volume has a
gentle slope

The front yard is used for public space,

serving for formal events such as meetings
of the school.
A backyard is more private, where students
spend their personal time.
Double Loaded Corridor

• Mostly suitable for high rise buildings

• Column spacing usually 24’ to accommodate 3 car at time at basement parking .
• Rooms are located at the both side of the corridor .
• Columns and shear wall construction are for high rise building.
Local Case Study

Project name : National library of Bangladesh.

Architect name: Muzharul Islam
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh .
Double loaded corridor

24ft columns are present

• The part of the Library began as a
pure square from which was slowly
and deliberately distorted to
acknowledge the contradictory
demands of climate, place, and
program.
• The seven-storey central volume
supported by concrete shear
wall and housing the concrete
shear walls and housing the
concrete stacks, forms the core
of the library .

• On the north side it is supported

by three-story load- bearing
brick structures.

• The enveloping walls of the

central volume are cut away at
the corners which continue
diagonally into the heart of the
building; serve to bring light into
that heart as well as to divide
the building into separate
functional components.

• Shape and positioning of the wings follows the shape of the
site
• Use of pure geometry in overall form of the building.
• The building is divided into three major blocks-
administrative building, exhibition gallery and theatre. The
administrative block, which is the biggest of all, occupies
prominent amount of space on the site.
• The architects vision was to make a bold statement and hold
itself on the huge site- hence the monumental scale of the
block.
• The Y-shape is chosen very thoughtfully to cover the
maximum area on the site. Not only that, the shape of the
block creates different sizes of pockets where other two
blocks are placed
