RECAP
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
Typically, an adverb will tell us more about the manner, time, place, or degree
of something, answering questions such as how or where.

6
Adverbs are like the ingredients in a sentence. They help us describe
how things appear and how things happened. They help us readers see an
action in our mind's eye. So, adverbs support us to control what others see
when we speak or write and are one of the necessary components of
good writing.

LESSON

In this lesson we will be discussing the details of what are the use of
Adverbs of Manner in composing clear and coherent sentences using
appropriate grammatical structures. But first, what is adverb of manner?
An adverb of manner tells how an action is done. It also modifies verbs,
adjectives, and other adverbs.

The suffix -ly is added to the end of adjective to form an adverb.

However, not all adverbs of manner end with -ly. These are the
following examples: well, fast, hard, little, much and straight. Most of
these can be also used as adjective.

Look and study some examples of adverbs of manner given below.

7
Study the following sentences given below. This will clearly explain the
use of adverbs of manner in composing sentence using correct structure of
sentence.

The girls ran.

(There is no adverb of manner in this sentence, so we can only imagine how
fast the girls are running.)

The girls ran quickly.

(The adverb of manner is quickly. It tells us that the girls are in a hurry.)

The girls were tired, so they ran more slowly than before.
(The adverb of manner is slowly. It tells us that the girls are running, but they
are not running fast as they were before.)

Some rules to remember regarding the usage of adverbs of manner in the

sentence:

 In using adverbs of manner in the sentence, be careful not to place them

between the object and the verb. They often fit best after the sentence’s
object or main verb.

Example:
She quickly agreed to go to the store for milk. (His agreement was quick)
(adverbs of manner placed before the main verb)
She agreed to go to the store for milk quickly. (He would go to the store
quickly)
(adverbs of manner placed after the object)

 If there is a preposition before the object, the adverb of manner may be

placed either before the preposition or after the sentence’s object.

She quietly asked me to leave the room. (Her request was quiet)
(adverbs of manner placed before the preposition)
She asked me to leave the room quietly. (I am not going to make noise
when I leave)
(adverbs of manner placed after the object)

8
 Add importance in a sentence by placing an adverb of manner before
and after, both the verb and object, and when these adverbs are placed
at the beginning of a sentence, they catch the reader’s attention.

The doctor woke-up the gently sleeping patient. (The patient was
sleeping
gently)
(adverbs of manner placed before both the verb and object)

The doctor gently woke-up the sleeping patient. (The doctor was gentle
while
waking the patient)
(adverbs of manner placed before both the verb and object)

Gently, the sleeping patient awakened by the doctor. (The doctor gently
awakened the sleeping
patient)
(adverbs of manner placed at the beginning of a sentence)
