TUTORIAL 2

1. Figure below shows the resistor limits the current in the circuit to 5A when
connected to a 10V battery. Find its resistance.

R=?

+
V=10V I=5A
-

2. Figure below shows a lamp circuit. The lamp has a resistance of 8Ω and requires
a 1.5A current to operate. Find the voltage required to turn on the lamp.

I=1.5A R=8Ω
V=?

3. What current will flow through a lamp when its resistance of 360Ω and is
connected to an ordinary house voltage of 115V as shown in figure below?

I=? R=360Ω
V=115V

4. Find the current drawn by a 60W spot-light lamp rated for 120V operation. Also
find the current drawn by a 150W,120V lamp and a 300W,120V lamp. As the
wattage increases, explain what happens to the current.

5. Find the power consumed by a fixed 25Ω resistor for each of the following
currents : 3A,6A, and 1.5A. What effect does a change in current have on the
amount of power dissipated by a fixed resistor? Explain it briefly.

6. The motor in a washing machine uses 1200W. How much energy in kilowatt-
hours is used in a week by a Laundromat with eight washers if they are all in use
10 hours per day (h/day) for a 6 day week?
7. A radio receiver draws 0.9A at 110V. If the set is used 3 h/day, how much energy
does it consume in 7 days?

8. Electric utility companies establish their rates at a give number of cents per
kilowatt-hour. Rates for electric energy in the United States depend upon the
method by which the electricity is generated. The type and complexity of the
transmission and distribution system, the maintenance cost, and many other
factors. By knowing amount of energy you use (from the meter readings) and the
cost per kilowatt-hour of energy in your area, can you calculate your own monthly
electric bill. One residence used 820kWh of electric energy in one month. If the
utility rate is 6 cents per kilowatt-hour, what was the owner’s electrical bill for the
month?

9. Use Ohm’s law to fill in the indicated quantity.

V I R
? 2A 3Ω
120V ? 2400 Ω
120V 24A ?
? 8mA 5kΩ
60V ? 12kΩ
110V 2mA ?
? 2.5A 6.4 Ω
2400V ? 1M Ω

10. A circuit consists of a 6V battery, a switch, and a lamp. When the switch is
closed, 2A flows in the circuit. What is the resistance of the lamp?
