prolong the useful life of tools and equipment.
5s in the workplace is defined as a methodology that results in a workplace that is clean, uncluttered, safe, and well
organized to help reduce waste and optimize productivity. It's designed to help build a quality work environment, both
physically and mentally. The 5S philosophy applies in any work area suited for visual control and lean production. The 5S
condition of a work area is critical to employees and is the basis of customers' first impressions.
Housekeeping refers to the routine cleaning and organizing of the workplace to avoid accidents and injuries.

Cleaning the Area According to 5s Principles

The 5s principles in housekeeping is very important in a farm because it improves efficiency and productivity, maintains
safety and cleanliness, ensures good control over the processes, and keeps the good product and/ or service quality.
Seiri (Sort)
The distinguishing between needed and unneeded items and to dispose of these items in a systematic manner.
Seiton (Systematize)
The arrangement of necessary items into good order so that they can easily selected for use.It is arranging needed items
so that they are easy to use and labeling them to make their storage sites understandable at a glance.
Seiso (Sweep)
The cleaning up one’s workplace completely so that there is no dust on floors, machines or equipment.Keeping everything
swept and clean and includes finding ways to prevent the accumulation of dirt and dust in farm equipment and facilities.
Seiketsu (Sanitize)
The maintaining of one’s workplace so that it is productive and comfortable by repeating Seiri-Seiton-Seiso.To cultivate
clean, fresh, spotless workplace where everyone adheres to prescribed procedures are the targets of seiketsu (systematize).
Shitsuke (Self- Discipline/ Sustain)
Training people to follow good work habits and the strict observation of workplace rules. It means to cultivate a disciplined
work/farm place where everyone is doing something on their own to maintain a clean environment and to correctly
understand the 5S philosophy.

Inspection, Maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment

The training people to follow good work habits and the strict observation of workplace rules. It means to cultivate a
disciplined work/farm place where everyone is doing something on their own to maintain a clean environment and to
correctly understand the 5S philosophy
The PPE must be inspected for defects every time it is put on. Look for symmetry; does each side look like a mirror image of
the other or is one side distorted? Are there any broken, bent, frayed or torn pieces? Are the lenses scratched so they are
hard to see through? Is the elastic still springy or is it stretched out? In addition to visual inspection as above, insulating gloves,
sleeves and blankets for electrical workers must be electrically tested. All must be tested prior to initial use, and then every 6
months thereafter for gloves, and every 12 months for sleeves and blankets. PPE should be clean. If dirty, clean it with soap
and warm water. Do not use solvents or abrasives to clean it. Store it out of sunlight in an area where it will be protected and
kept clean. Replace reusable PPE every 2‐5 years, earlier if recommended by the manufacturer or if there is a major impact.
Replace any defective parts with parts made by the same manufacturer for that equipment. Do not make makeshift repairs.
If it cannot be repaired properly, replace it. Do not use paint or glue on PPE. Use decals or stickers to mark it.

Maintenance of Simple Farm Tools (Checking, Cleaning and Storing Farm Tools)
The following maintenance practices or precautions are to be adopted to prolong the life span and effective use of farm
tools
• Tools should be washed or cleaned after use.
• Oil, grease or lubricate movable parts to reduce friction.
• Sharpen tools with blunt edges or blades regularly. e.g., cutlass
• Paint, oil or grease metallic parts to prevent rusting if they are to be kept for a long time.
• Store tools in a cool dry place.
• Replace worn-out or damaged parts of farm tools.
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
• Check and tighten loose nuts and bolts daily or periodically.
• Remove tools with wooden parts away from the sun to avoid cracking.
• Keep metallic tools away from rain or moist places to avoid rusting.
• Keep tools with wooden handles away from termites and fire.
• Handle tools with care and use them for the right farm operations.

E. Engagement (Time Frame: ½ Day)

Learning Task 3: Directions: Situational Analysis. Worker A is tasked to do basic housekeeping using the principles of 5s in the
workplace. Let us give him at least 5 specific suggestions to improve the workplace.

Learning Task 4: Directions: Situational Analysis. Read the word problem below and answer the task that follows.
Mr. S, the poultry farm manager of “Manukan sa Bukid” wants to ensure the safety and welfare of his farm workers and
laborers. His main priority aside from success in income generation is to keep the safety and security of his employees. The first
phase of his plan is to install the appropriate warning signs and labels in the workplace. Being a beginner in agribusiness, let us
help Mr. S in installing the appropriate signs and labels in each of the following situations inside the box. Draw or illustrate the
appropriate sign or label.

1. A site in the farm where there is an

unfinish digging or excavation for a deep
well.

2. A slippery area in the farm.

3. The room for the power supply in the

entire farm.

Learning Task 5: Directions: Situational Analysis. Read the situation below and answer the task that follows.
The farm workers are assigned by the farm manager to do the housekeeping in the farm. The assigned workers find it
hard to do the task. Let us guide them with the correct housekeeping practices based on 5s by choosing the correct answer
inside the box.
- Throw all the garbage and other non- useful materials. – Recycle the materials into something useful.
- Store all the farm tools together. – Make a compost out of chicken manure
- Maintain the cleanliness of the farm. – Ignore the presence of flies as it is normal in a farm.
- Teach the co- workers in maintaining the orderliness of the farm. – Post signages about cleanliness and orderliness.
- Keep all the medicines and other harmful chemicals together. – Burn the shed feathers of the chicken
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
V. ASSESSMENT (Time Frame: ½ Day)

Learning Task 6: Directions: True or False. Write true if the statement is correct and false if not.
1. Posting of label and signages is very important in housekeeping.
2. Housekeeping is present in 5s.
3. Oil, grease or lubricate movable parts to reduce friction.
4. The PPE must no longer be inspected for defects every time it is put on
5. Make an improvised or makeshift repair on PPE.

VI. REFLECTION (Time Frame: ½ Day)

• Communicate your personal assessment as indicated in the Learner’s Assessment Card.
Personal Assessment on Learner’s Level of Performance
Using the symbols below, choose one which best describes your experience in working on each given task. Draw it in the column
for Level of Performance (LP). Be guided by the descriptions below:
 - I was able to do/perform the task without any difficulty. The task helped me in understanding the target content/ lesson.
 - I was able to do/perform the task. It was quite challenging, but it still helped me in understanding the target content/lesson.
? – I was not able to do/perform the task. It was extremely difficult. I need additional enrichment activities to be able to do/perform this
task.
