Study On The Process of Reassembling Knitting Machine Parts
Study On The Process of Reassembling Knitting Machine Parts
Experiment No: 02
Name of the Experiment:
Study on the process of reassembling knitting machine parts
Remark:
1.0 INTRODUCTION:
A knitting machine with needles and yarn feeds organized in a circle for knitting fabrics, hosiery,
sweaters, and underwear. A knitting machine is used to make knitted fabrics. The device carries
and coordinates the movement of a number of mechanisms and gadgets each performing specific
characteristic which contributes towards the efficiency of the knitting action. Knitting machines
have an array of needles, each holding an individual knitting stitch. When a carriage passes over
a needle it creates a new stitch. (This process being about 100 times faster than hand knitting.) In
tubular knitting machines, carriages move on a circular rail, while in flat knitting, carriages move
back and forth, changing directions after each row. Although having to go back and forth is a
backdraw, since it deceases knitting speed, and exceeds more stress on the machine, flat bed
knitting machines have become extremely popular, in applications where flexibility in shaping is
required. Knitted Product is one of the highest demand products in the world. For bulk
production, different apparel manufacturing companies produce raw fabric for the final knitted
garments by various kinds of knitting machines. Among all other knitting machines widely used
machine is a circular knitting machine. As a student of textile engineer, fashion designing, IPE
(Industrial & Production Engineering) or an employee of Textile or RMG (Ready Made
Garments) sector anyone should know the different parts of a knitting machine and their
functions.
In this experiment Brother KH 840 knitting machine has been studied. KH 840 is a 24 stitch
punch card machine. It is same sort of age as the 830 but has a slightly better specification, it is
capable of doing a single motif automatically. It is a nice machine but again these models are
getting on and will almost certainly need a full service. It can’t use the Brother Garter Carriage.
There are two types of Japanese knitting machine stands, tilting and non tilting. Being able to
adjust the stand is helpful when a ribber is attached. If you want to knit flat, you can shift the
main bed down and forward for a more user friendly angle without removing the ribber. The
Brother Garter Carriages are an electronic machine which will work with ether the appropriate
Brother Electronic machine or the Brother Punch Card machine. You must make sure that you
have the correct model to fit your machine & that your machine will take a Garter Carriage.
Basically the machine moves backwards and forwards over your machine, knitting each stitch. It
has the ability to do a knit and pearl in one row the only other way this can be achieved when

using a knitting machine is by hand tooling. The machine has the advantage of working on it’s
own, you setup the number of rows required, make sure that the pattern is setup and away it will
go. Obviously you have to stop to increase or decrees stitches. The machines if working
correctly and setup correctly has an automatic cut-out for safety. Not the fastest way to knit a
garment but brilliant results can be achieved. The reassembelling process of knitting machine has
be studied in this experiment which will be helpful in future in order to fix or clean same kind of
knitting machines.

Below is a detailed photo tutorial on how to disassemble a Brother Knitting KH840 punch card
knitting machine. The steps are fairly similar to other makes and models as well.
Step 1.
Place the machine on its back. Locate the two brackets that hold the table clamps. Unscrew it.
Step 2.
Set the hardware to the side in a bowl and remove the other bracket.

Step 3.
Turn the machine back over and set on your worktable. Unlatch the lid clasps and remove the lid.
Set it aside.
Step 4.

Step 5.
Using a pusher, push one end of the sponge bar and pull it out from the opposite side. A thick
bamboo skewers since they won’t damage anything if I slip on the plastic or metal.
Step 6.
You need to remove all the needles. Start at one end and pull the needle all the way towards you
until its butt hits the end of its channel.

Step 7.
Step 8.
Push down on the latch end and simultaneously lift up on the back end of the needle. Pull it out
towards the back of the machine. Continue across the bed of the machine, removing all the
needles. Slight force may need to lift up towards the back for the needle to carefully clear the
plastic housing.

Step 9.
Remove the lid on the built-in accessory box and set aside. Locate the screw holding this section
of plastic housing in place. Unscrew and set the screw aside in a bowl. Different sections of
hardware should keep in separate collection bowls. It makes reassembly less confusing.
Step 10.
Move to the adjacent section of plastic housing and locate its screws. Remove the screw and add
to your collection bowls.

Step 11.
This section had a total of 3 screws. The last two were on each side of the punch card reader.
Remove the screws and add to your collection bowls.
Step 12.
Grab the plastic decorative top on the selection lever and gently pull it off. It will catch and fly
off when you go to remove the plastic cover if you don’t take it off now.

Step 13.
Here it is removed.
Step 14.
Lift off the cover and set aside. Please note that one side of the plastic cover usually lays on top
of its neighbor where they meet in the middle. Your machine may be different. You can only
remove the top cover first.

Step 15.
On this knitting machine, the punch card mechanism cover set on top of the accessory toolbox
section. Therefore, the accessory toolbox section must gently push to the side to get it out from
under the case edge.

Step 17.
The punch card pusher button will be loose. Before removing the machine from the case, lift it
out and set aside.
Step 18.
Locate the three screws securing the right side of the metal bed. Remove the screws and add to
your collection bowls.

Step 19.
Locate the three screws securing the left side of the metal bed. Remove the screws and add to
your collection bowls.
Step 20.
It’s almost done. Locate the screw to the left of the center back, attaching the metal bed to the
case. Remove the screw and add to your collection bowls.

Step 21.
Locate the screws in the center back, further attaching the metal bed to the case. Remove the
screws and add to your collection bowls.
Step 22.
Lift the knitting machine out of the case and set it on your worktable.

Before cleaning we usually take the machine outside to blow it out with compressed air. A very
much amount of fluff and junk will come flying out. Once de-fluffed, we wiped down as much
as possible. We used simple Green, a degreaser, on the plastic parts and case, and denatured
alcohol on the metal bed and needles. Don’t use water based cleaners on the metal bed parts. It
will seep into the cracks and potentially rust. When it’s all squeaky clean and totally dry,
reassemble in reverse order.
5.0 DISCUSSION
6.0 CONCLUSION
In this experiment the disassembling and reassembling processes of a knitting machine have been studied
thoroughly in order to learn the whole process. This will help us in future to dissemble and reassemble a
knitting machine. If a knitting machine do not work properly, then it is important to find out the problem.
But in order to find the problem it is needed to disassemble the knitting machine and fix the problem and
again reassemble the machine. This experiment will help us to fix a knitting machine if it do not work
properly. It is also important to learn all the steps of disassembling and reassembling of a knitting
machine as shown in the experiment in order to make no mistake.
