Solubility & Miscibility by Tracy Hegarty: Background
Solubility & Miscibility by Tracy Hegarty: Background
Subject: Chemistry
Background:
Solids that dissolve in liquids are soluble. Those that do not
dissolve are insoluble. Liquids that mix with other liquids are
miscible. Those that do not dissolve are immiscible. Polar
solvents dissolve polar solutes. Non-polar solvents dissolve
non-polar solutes.
Problem:
Which solids and liquids will dissolve in water?
Why do some solids dissolve in water and others do not? Why
do some liquids dissolve in water and others do not? What is
occuring at the molecular level?
Hypothesis:
Materials:
Test tube rack, eight test tubes, water, salt, sugar, cooking oil,
vinegar, alcohol, iron filings, sulfur, glycerol, diluted food
coloring, and dish soap.
Procedure:
1. Half-fill four test tubes with water.
2. Predict what will happen when you mix the water with a
small amount of each substance as indicated: (1)sugar (2)iron
filings
(3)sulfur (4)salt. Record your predictions.
3. Make solutions and record results in table format.
4. Predict what will happen when alcohol, vinegar, oil, and
glycerol are each added individually to the four test tubes of
water. Record you predictions.
5. In test tubes 5-8, add water until 1/3 full. In test tube 8, add
a few drops of diluted food coloring. Next add an equal
amount of vinegar to test tube 5, equal amount of alcohol to 6,
equal amount of oil to 7, and equal amount of gycerol to test
tube 8. Record the results.
6. Add salt to test tube 8 and stir. Record what you observe.
7. Now add a drop of dish soap to test tube 8 and mix. Record
what you observed.
Conclusion Questions:
How are mixtures alike for tubes 1-4? for 5-8?
for 1-8?
Explain what is happening in each tube at the molecular level.
