1.0 Introduction:
Weft knitting is a knitted piece of fabric where the stitches run from left to right horizontally
across the fabric. It is usually knitted with one piece of yarn, and can be made either by hand or
using a knitting machine. Weft knitting is the most common form of knitting as it is simpler than
warp knitting, the other form of knitting.

2.0 Objectives:
The objectives are given below-

1.To know about knitting.

2.To know about single jersey.

3.To learn about face side .

4.To know about back side .

5.To understand about WPI.

6.To know about CPI.

7.To know how to measure stitch length.

8.To gain knowledge about stitch density.

9.To realize how to calculate gauge.

10.To know about gauge formula.

11.To know about stitch density formula.

3.0 Theory:
The process of making fabrics which are produced by two sets of yarn interlooping is called
knitting. Single jersey is a weft knitted fabric whose face side and back side are different,wales
are clearly visible on the face side of the fabric .In fabric the horizontal direction is called course
and vertically direction is called wales for knitted fabrics. Stitch length is the length of a yarn
after unroving a loop from fabrics.
Stitch density = WPI × CPI.

Where,

WPI = wales per inch.

CPI = course per inch.

Gauge is the no of neddle per inch .

Mathematecally we can show,

Gauge = No of neddle / per inch

4.0 Experimental Setup:

5.0 Experiment data :
Data for stitch length:

No of yarn Stitch length Average stitch length

(inch) (inch)
01 3.00
02 2.98
03 3.00
04 2.98
05 3.00 2.98
06 2.98
07 3.00
08 3.00
09 2.97
10 2.98

From sample,

WPI= Wales per inch =29; CPI=Course per inch =60.

Now , stitch density = WPI × CPI

=(29 ×60)

=1740 per square inch

Gauge= no of needle/per inch,

Here,

No of wales=29

So, Gauge = 29/inch

6.0 Result:
Stitch length= 2.98“ ; WPI=29; CPI=60; Stitch density = 1740 per square inch and
Gauge = 29/inch.
7.0 Discussion:
We know about weft knitting structure from this experiment. After cutting 1” fabric we pulled
out 10 yarns from this and measured length. We got 10 data from 10 yarn, then we average this
value and finally got a stitch length. Then we measured the number of wales and number of
coarse per unit length of 1”.After that we calculated the stitch density. As the number of wales
per inch is equal to number of length so gauge is equal to the number of wales per inch.

8.0 Conclusion:
The lab was really important for us to gain knowledge about basic weft knitted structure .Here
we have taken all data very carefully. After that we calculated those data and got the result.But
this process was tough. Collecting thread was not so easy task so we had to be extra careful
about that. Otherwise, we couldn’t find the required output.
