DAILY LESSON PLAN

Grade Level: 9-
DLP No.: 1 Learning Area: SCIENCE Quarter:1st Duration: 1 Hour
Pollux
Relate species extinction to the failure of
Learning Competency: populations of organisms to adapt to abrupt changes
in the environment.
Key Concepts / Under- An important goal of this lesson is for students to understand that biodiversity is
standing to be Developed: necessary for life and that species preservation is important to all of us
Knowledge Explain the importance of biological diversity.
OBJECTIVES
LEARNING

Skills Distinguish environmental changes that may result in the loss of the species.

Attitude: Cite other human activities that leads to extinction.

Biodiversity and Evolution

CONTENT:
Causes of Species Extinction
Reference:
Learner’s Material (Modules)
LEARNING RESOURCES:
Learning Materials:
Powerpoint Presentation
Introductory The class will start with daily classroom routines ( prayer, attendance check and
EDUR
PROC

Activity: (3mins.) energizer )

The teacher will let them answer a short pre test

The teacher tells the students to study Figure 1 and 2.

Picture yourself swimming and diving in Tubbataha Reef Marine Park.

(Trivia: Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park located at the middle of the Sulu
Sea, 181 kilometers southeast of Puerto Princess, Palawan. It covers 33,200
Activity: hectares including the north and south reefs. It is a marvelous marine wilderness
(7mins.) with a very high density of marine species, with 80% coral cover of 46 coral
genres and 376 fish species and a special ecosystem much appreciated for its
beauty as well as its scientific value.)

 What organisms are in Figure 1?

 How many kinds of organisms do you think you will see?

Imagine yourself standing in a coconut plantation.

 Which species do you think dominates this area?

Compare the population of the 2 ecosystems.

ES

Analysis: (5 mins.) How important is biodiversity ?

Abstraction: The teacher will show introductory video about biodiversity (3mins )
( 5mins.)
The teacher will lead the discussion about the biodiversity and evolution to the
(15 mins) students.

What is biodiversity ?

It is the variety of earth’s species, the genes they contain, the ecosystems in
which they live, and the ecosystems processes such as energy flow and nutrient
cycling that sustain all life.

Biodiversity is a vital renewable resource.

It is this biodiversity that sustains us and our economies.

The teacher will explain the three types of biodiversity

 Species diversity
 Genes diversity
 Ecosystem diversity

The teacher will the ask the question

“ How important is biodiversity ?”

All of this diversity is structured, and it is supposed to interact in a certain way

for it to work properly. That’s how life on Earth started, and continued to
flourish. As the most dominant species on Earth, we are fortunate enough to
study it and appreciate it

Extinction

-the end of existence of a group of organism, caused by their inability to adapt to

changing environmental conditions.

Species basic concepts in the classification of organism. In simple term, a single

species is a distinct kind of organism with a characteristic, shape, size, behavior,
and habitat that remains constant from year to year.

How Do Extinction and Human Activities Affect Biodiversity?

 The teacher will show a short video clip about human activities that
greatly affects the biodiversity of the environment.
 The teacher will ask students
What are the human activities that you can identify the said video ?

The teacher will then discuss and explain why does evolution happen and what
are the factors that lead to extinction of species

The teacher will ask the students to think of way on how to protect our own
biodiversity and will give them at least 10 mins to answer the following
questions below

Application: 1.Write at least 3 ways on how to conserve /protect our biodiversity.

( 15mins.)
2. Why is biodiversity important ?

The teacher will ask some representative to share their insights.

Assessment: Answer the following questions below :

( 5mins.) 1.When an ecosystem has a high level a biodiversity it is more
_______________.
a.Fragile c.developed
b.extinct d.stable

2. Which of the following is not a type of biodiversity?

a. Ecosystem Diversity c.Species Diversity
b.Mass Extinction Diversity d. Ecosystem Diversity

3. Which type of biodiversity is the genetic variation within a population?

a. GEnetic Diversity c.Species Diversity
b.Mass Extinction Diversity d. Ecosystem Diversity

4. Which of the following is a reason why genetic diversity is important?

a. Animals will have different fur patterns
b. Flowers will come in different colors
c. Helps the species adapt and survive disease
d. Animals will have more things to eat

5. Biodiversity is the variety of ________ in a given area

a.organisms c. communities
b.genes d.species

6.The best-adapted organisms are more likely to survive and breed. This is called

a.Natural Selection b.Evolution c. mutation d.selective breeding

7. The process by which changes in organisms happen over many, many
generations is known as
A. evolution C.variation
D.revolution D. survival

8. ab
A. Pollution C. Overexploitation
B.Invasive alien species D. habitat destruction
Assignment:
Study in advance about ecosystem ,photosynthesis and cellular respiration
( 3mins.)
The teacher will ask students to fill-in the exit pass before he leaves the class.
Concluding
(Note: The exit pass contains the question: How can I apply in my life the things
Activity: (2mins.)
that I’ve learned today?)
