Dracula: Genre, Author,
Inspiration
● Dracula is a epistolary novel written
by the Irish Bram Stoker in 1897,
inspired by the figure of Vlad III,
Prince of Wallachia, and is one of the
last examples of Gothic novels.

● Taking up the myth of the


aristocratic vampire, Stoker creates a
novel with a dark atmosphere, in
which horror and threat plague the
protagonists.
Dracul: Narration
● The novel is divided in 4 parts, each
one show us a different point of
view related to different characters.

● This type of narration helps the


reader to understand the
character's behaviour and
thoughts, but, more important, help
us to explore their psychology.
● Dracula in this way represents a
unique novel that moves away from
traditional narrative styles in order
to narrate an episodic story through
different textual documents.
Dracula: Bram
Stoker
● Abraham Stoker was an irish writer who became
famous as the author of Dracula.

● Even if he produced different famous books,


during his lifetime he was best known for being
the personal assistant to actor Henry Irving and
the economic director of the Lyceum Theatre in
London, owned by Irving himself.

● Stoker took seven years to write the book


studying the culture and religion of the Balkans
and researching on the historical figure of Vlad
Tepes.
Dracula: Characters Dracula and Harker

● The main figure is Count Dracula, a Romanian


prince from Transylvania, who, by denying God,
was cursed to the status of a vampire.

● Professor Abraham van Helsing of Dutch origin,


represents the antagonist of Dracula and
declares a war without end to the vampires.

● Harker is a London Lawyer, ready for the wedding


with his girlfriend Mina Murray, he is
commissioned to go to Transylvania on behalf of a
real estate agency, at the castle of Count Dracula,
from where he will barely escape.

● Renfield is a patient, Dracula's servant, Renfield
admitted to Dr. Seward's asylum. He
will later be killed by the count himself
for betraying him.

● Lucy Westenra is introduced as Mina


Murray's best friend, the 19-year-old
daughter of a wealthy family; Dracula
will turn her in a vampire. Mina Harker

● Mina Harker is a young school


mistress (teaching etiquette and
decorum) who has been engaged to
Jonathan Harker. Unfortunately, she
falls in love with Dracula and will be
bitten.

● Transylvania is a historical region
that is located in central Romania.

● Bound on the east and south by its


natural borders, the Carpathian
mountain range.

● The region of Transylvania is known


for the scenery of its Carpathian
landscape and its rich history.

● The Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle)


will be both the starting and end Map of Romania
point of the story.
