• You can recognise the formula of an acid because every formula begins
with H for hydrogen.

• Binary acids are compounds that contain hydrogen and one other
element. To name the acid, use the prefix “hydro”. Change the ending of
the element to “ic”. For example the name of HCl is hydrochloric acid.

• Ternary acids contain hydrogen and a polyatomic ion with Oxygen. DO

NOT USE “HYDRO” WHEN NAMING THESE ACIDS.

• If the polyatomic ion used in the acid ends in “ate”, change the ending of
the polyatomic ion to “ic”. For example, H2SO4 is called sulphuric acid.

• If the polyatomic ion used in the acid ends in “ite”, change the ending of
the polyatomic ion to “ous”. For example, H2SO3 is called sulphurous acid.

When given the formula of the acid, write the name. If given the name of the
acid, write the formula.

1. HBr Hydrobromic acid 11. Dichromic Acid H2Cr2O7

2. H2CO3 Carbonic acid 12. Hypochlorous Acid HClO

3. HI Hydriodic acid 13. Phosphorous Acid H3PO4

4. HNO3 Nitric acid 14. Nitrous Acid HNO2

5. HF Hydrofluoric acid 15. Acetic Acid HC2H3O2

6. H3PO4 Phosphoric acid 16. Hypochlorous Acid HClO

7. H2SO3 Sulfurous acid 17. Hydrochloric Acid HCl

8. H2S Hydrosulphuric acid 18. Perchloric Acid HClO4

9. H2SO4 Sulphuric acid 19. Chlorous acid HClO2

10. HC2H3O2 Acetic acid 20. Phosphoric acid H3PO4
