EXAM 2 – PRESSURE

Terms
1. Is the instrument used to measure the absolute pressure of the atmosphere?
(Barometer)
2. intensity of pressure measured above or below atmospheric (Gage Pressure)
3. The hydrostatic paradox states the fact that in different shaped containers, with the
same base area, which are filled with a liquid of the same height, the applied force by
the liquid on the base of each container is exactly (the same)
4. Normal force exerted by a fluid acting on a unit area of the surface (Pressure)
5. Branch of fluid mechanics that deals with fluids that are at rest with respect to the
surfaces that bound them (Fluid Statics)
6. Standard Atmospheric Pressure? (29.92 inHG)
7. Intensity of pressure measured above the absolute zero pressure line (Absolute
Pressure)
8. Pressure is transmitted undiminished in all direction of a fluid at rest and acts normal to
the surfaces of the confining medium or any submerged plane (Pascal’s Law)
9. The pressure exerted by the atmosphere on any surface it comes in contact with
(Atmospheric Pressure)
10. Note that if a gage pressure is below atmospheric, this represents a vacuum and its gage
value is (Negative)
Problem Solving
1. In the figure shown, atmospheric pressure at 101.03 kPa and the absolute pressure at
the bottom of the tank is 231.3 kPa, What is the specific gravity of the olive oil? (1.38)

2. The Fuel gage for a gasoline (RD=0.68) tank in a car reads proportional to its bottom
gage. If the tank is 30 cm deep and accidentally contaminated with 2 cm of water, how
many centimeters of gasoline does the tank actually contain when the gage
erroneously reads “FULL”? (27.06cm)

3. In the Figure Shown, What is the static pressure in kPa in the air chamber? The
chamber is open to the atmosphere. (-11.77kPa)
4. In the figure shown, determine the height h of water and the gage reading at A when
the absolute pressure at B is 290 kPa? (h=2.203m)(Pa=203 kPaabs)

5. Compute the gage pressure of a gas in torr having an absolute pressure of 40 psia and
atmospheric pressure of 846 mbar absolute. (1433.48torr)

6. Assuming specific weight of air to be at 12 N/m 3, what is the approximate height of a

certain Mountain if a mercury barometer at the base of the mountain reads 754mm
and at the same instant, another barometer at the top of the mountain reads 492mm?
(2912.916m)

7. The diameters of a small piston and a large piston of a hydraulic jack are 3 cm and 10
cm respectively. A force of 80 N is applied on the small piston. Find the load lifted by
the large piston when: a) the piston are on the same level; b) small piston is 40 cm
above the large piston. (888.89N) (919.7N)
