What is Vocal Music?

A vocal music is a genre performed by one or more singers, with or without the instrumental accompaniment to focus on
the singing.

What is sacred music? How is it different from liturgical and devotional music?
When Spaniards came to the Philippines, they influenced not only our cultural practices but also our beliefs and
religion. These religious beliefs are well-expressed in sacred music.
Sacred music is performed or composed for religious gatherings and fellowships.
Liturgical music originated as part of religious rites and includes ancient and modern traditions. It is part of the
Roman Catholic Mass.
Devotional music accompanies religious observances and rituals.
What are the types of sacred music in the Philippines?
1. Mass in the Philippines is for praising, thanksgiving and is considered as the highest form of praying to God. Songs in

the Mass can be played and sung in fast or slow tempo

2. Pastores a Christmas season folk dance and song. It reenacts how the shepherds visited the child Jesus in the

manger. The actors and actresses go for one house to another singing the daygon (worship). They sing songs with

3. Senakulo this is played during the Lenten season. It portrays events from the Old and New Testament about the life,

4. Pasyon a Philippine epic that narrates the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The verses are

structured in five-line stanzas, with each line containing eight syllables. It’s recitation is known as pabasa.

5. Salubong is celebrated during the pre-dawn of Easter Sunday. It is a scene that shows the Risen Christ meeting with

His mother Mary. Salubong is usually held outside the church where arch are prepared and a child portrayed as an

6. Flores De Mayo – a Spanish term “Flowers of May”. It is a festival held in the Philippines to honor the Blessed Virgin

Mary every month of May. The Flowers of May or the Beautiful Flowers that in the Meditation Durinhg the whole

month of May are offered by devotees to Mary of the Holiest.

7. Santacruzan – is a religious celebration throughout the Philippines, highlighted during the Celebration of the Flores

de Mayo. It is a colorful event during the month of May that recalls the finding of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena

and her son, Emperor Constantine. After the cross was found in Jerusalem, it was brought back to Rome, where

there was a joyful celebration as thanksgiving.
