Self-Learning Module for Grade 11

The Process of Evolution
EARTH and LIFE SCIENCE

Introduction

Ecosystem refers to an interacting group of natural elements and the

organism in a given environment. It is a unit of interrelationships between and
among living things and non-living things (Salandanan et. al 2016).

Directions for the User

Here are some reminders to guide as you go through this module:
1. Read and follow each directions carefully;
2. Answer the pre-test before proceeding to the activity;
3. Take down notes and record points for clarification;
4. Always aim to get at least 80% of the total number of items given;
5. Be sure to answer the post test at the end of the module.

Pre-test
Directions: Read each statement and choose the letter of the correct
answer. Shade the circle that corresponds to the correct answer.

Competencies : Describe the principles of ecosystem S11/12LT-IVfg-28

Objectives:
1. Give examples of biotic and abiotic components of ecosystem;
2. Label organizational levels as one of the fundamental principles of ecosystem;
3. Arrange food chain and food web.

Procedure / Learning Experience

A. Engage (Activity 1)
Biotic and abiotic influence the ecosystem. Biotic components include
plants, animals, algae, fungi, and microorganisms while abiotic components are
all physical factors like wind, nutrients soil types, rocks, sun, and temperature of
the air.
Look around you. Write at least 8 biotic and abiotic components that you
can see in your surroundings. Write your answer inside the box.

B. Explore (Activity 2)
The ecosystem is arrange in various levels. From the given choices of
organizational levels, write the letter that corresponds to each figure. Write your
answer on the space provided.

C. Explain
The fundamental principles of the ecosystem include adaptation and
behavior, organizational levels, biodiversity, and energy flow.
The environment is constantly changing. Because of its changes,
organisms constantly undergo adaptation — the process of change to
accommodate environmental conditions over a short period of time. For instance,
certain animals undergo hibernation during the winter season.

Organisms are capable of adapting due to their behavior. Behavior is an

organism’s response to biotic and abiotic stimuli.
The ecosystem is arranged in various levels. The levels of organization are
organized from smallest to largest. The first level of organization pertains to
an organism, which refers to the individual species. The second level is
the population which refers to a group of organisms of the same species in the
same area. The third level of organization is the community which involves more
than one species or more than one population. The fourth level of organization is
the ecosystem which involves several communities combined with abiotic factors.
The last and final level is the biosphere which encompasses all ecosystems. The
biosphere is essentially the surface of the Earth.
Biodiversity refers to the variability of organisms in an ecosystem
In energy flow, for an organism to survive it must be able to acquire energy
from either the environment or another organism. The food chain represents a
single pathway of events in which energy and matter flow in an ecosystem. Food
chain interweave and form the bigger energy interaction called food web.

D. Elaborate (Activity 3)
A. Food Chain.
Direction: Put an arrow from producer to the consumers.
