CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the introduction,

the statement of the problem, significance of the study, and scope and delimitation of the study.

The Introduction

Bananas are sweet, soft fruits popular all over the wheir thick, fibrous peels. However,

they are a less popular source of nutrition, at least in Western countries. But contrary to what

many people believe, banana peels are not only safe to eat, they also offer a number of health

benefits. In addition to the nutritional benefits of eating banana peels, there are environmental

benefits as well. Bananas are the most widely eaten fresh fruit in America and other countries.

By eating the peels, you can help minimize the amount of food that goes to landfills. (Arefa

Cassoobhoy, MD, MPH, 2020).

Fertilizers are used daily by farmers and families to help crops and gardens grow. Whether for

a small garden of flowers, and plants, or a large farm with thousands of acres of crops, a wide

range of fertilizers have been developed to help different crops grow in different soil and weather
7

conditions. Banana peels are good for gardens because they contain 42 percent potassium, one of

the three components of fertilizer along with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and shown on

fertilizer labels as NPK. In fact, banana peels have the highest organic sources of potassium.

Potassium aids plants in moving nutrients, water between cells and strengthens plant’s stems.

Chemical ingredients help create fertilizers that promote plant growth and are cost effective too,

but chemical fertilizers can also be harmful to people, nitrates are the ingredients that cause the

poisoning, and touching the fertilizer may cause skin irritation it can also contribute to pollution.

(Barbano,2020). The scientific name for bananas is Musa sapientum, which translates as “fruit of

the wise men.” And you are wise, indeed, to use banana peels as fertilizer. If you are the one who

loves to plant, this is the best fertilizer for you not only it can make your plants stronger it is also

harmless.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to let people know the ability and benefits of a simple banana and also to

know the insights of people about making a safe and healthy planting. More specifically, it

attempts to find the answers to the following questions:

1. What are the components of banana peel that have the power to boost the growth of

plants naturally?

2. How to make banana peel fertilizer effective and bring more nutrients to plants?
8

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the ability and qualities of producing banana peels as an

essential and effective fertilizer in plant growth.

The researchers interviewed people who are actually fond of planting, these days many people

are fond of planting and it has also become their hobby, especially on quarantine. The study

involved that banana peels form about 18–33% of the whole fruit mass and are considered as a

waste product that limits to using it as a fertilizer (Wolfe et al, 2003). These peels were not being

used for any other purposes and are mostly dumped as solid waste at large expense (Sudha et al,

2015). Since banana peels are not a complete fertilizer, don't rely on the peels alone to feed your

plants, especially if your plants are heavy nitrogen feeders. The peels are most effective when

composted to blend with nitrogen-rich materials ( Reed, 2019).

9

Significance of the Study

This study will greatly help the people usually those on the agricultural system would like

to use organic fertilizer from the banana peels for the quick cultivation of their plants.

Through this study the cells and the bear fruit of your plants will be healthy. This study could

motivate and challenge all the people not only because of the potential of these banana peels but

also because of the fruit from all efforts that they receive to the world and make a better future.

“While every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, so that it will be even more fruitful.” ( John

15, AD 250).

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter of the paper presents the review of related literature and studies done by the

researchers. This chapter talks about the means of the study and the different themes of the study.

The function of this review is to fully understand the definition of fertilizers, different types of

fertilizers, and advantages and disadvantages of fertilizers also it includes the synthesis which is

the conclusion of the researchers.

Defining Fertilizer

Fertilizers are chemical substances applied to crops to increase their productivity. These

are used by the farmers daily to increase the crop yield. The fertilizers contain the essential

nutrients required by the plants, including nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. They enhance

the water retention capacity of the soil and also increase its fertility (Byju’s, 2011). Fertilizer is

any material of natural or synthetic origin that is applied to soil or to plant tissues to supply plant

nutrients. Fertilizers may be distinct from liming materials or other than non-nutrient soil

amendments. Many fertilizers exist, both natural and industrially produced. However, starting in

the 19th century, after innovations in plant nutrition, an agricultural industry developed around

synthetically created fertilizers. This transition was important in transforming the global food
11

system, allowing for larger-scale industrial agriculture with large crop yields. In particular

nitrogen-fixing chemical processes such as the Haber process at the beginning of the 20th

century, amplified by production capacity created during World War II led to a boom in using

nitrogen fertilizers. In the later half of the 20th century, increased use of nitrogen fertilizers

(800% increase between 1961 and 2019) have been a crucial component of the increased

productivity of conventional food systems (more than 30% per capita) as part of the so called

"Green Revolution" (Wikipedia, n.d.).

Types of Fertilizers

A good gardener knows the importance of a good fertilizer. Recognizing which

fertilizer best fits the needs of your specific plants will help you to maximize your gardens’

growth. Become a fertilizing expert as you learn about the different options and nutrients that can

impact your plants. There are four different types of Fertilizers which are organic and inorganic

fertilizer. Organic fertilizers are made from natural and organic materials— mainly manure,

compost, or other animal and plant products. These fertilizers are a great source of nutrients,

though there isn’t a measurable amount of any specific nutrients—some bags will print

estimates. Organic fertilizers tend to work slowly and over the long-term. It can help to build up

your soil over time. One of the best benefits of organic fertilizers is that it can be made at home.

Inorganic fertilizers are made of chemical components that contain necessary nutrients. If you’re
12

looking to give your garden a quick boost, this is likely the best option for you. For successful

short-term growth, determine what nutrient your plant needs and use an inorganic fertilizer with

nutrients. The second type is Nitrogen Fertilizers is a plan nutrient responsible for growth. This

ingredient is useful in fertilizers, particularly during the middle stages of a plant’s lifespan, when

it needs encouragement to continue to grow large and stem new leaves. Both organic and

inorganic fertilizers have sources of nitrogen in them. Next type of fertilizer is the Phosphate

Fertilizers. Phosphorus is a nutrient that plants need continuously. Throughout their lifecycle,

phosphorus helps to strengthen the root system and stems of a plant. Flowering, seeding, and

fruiting can all be improved with phosphorus. Plants with a phosphorus deficiency will

experience stunted growth. Phosphorus is long-lasting and slow acting. Using fertilizer in your

soil before planting is generally a good idea. The last type of fertilizer is the Potassium Fertilizer.

Potassium will help your plants to grow deeper and stronger roots. It can help protect your plants

from harm when they are deprived of other nutrients. This nutrient is vital for photosynthesis and

has the ability to slow down any diseases that may infect your garden. Potassium fertilizer has a

lot of benefits. The when and how of planting this fertilizer will depend on what you're planting.

When you are using this fertilizer, place it as close to the roots as possible (“All Green”, n.d.)

Advantages of Fertilizers

According to the Yara International, just as humans need essential minerals and

nutrients for strong, healthy growth, so do the world's crops. Our core business of fertilizer
13

production is intimately connected with agricultural productivity and food production. The role

of fertilizers in food production is usually underestimated. Fertilizers are food for plants.

Fertilizers replace the nutrients that crops remove from the soil. Without the addition of

fertilizers, crop yields and agricultural productivity would be significantly reduced. That’s why

mineral fertilizers are used to supplement the soil’s nutrient stocks with minerals that can be

quickly absorbed and used by crops. Thus, in order to meet human nutritional needs in the crops

and meat we eat, we need to replace what we take out. The key is to get this balance right and to

maintain a level of nutrients in soils that will support our crops without applying excess.

Each crop draws down from these reserves and we need to replace them with fertilizers, every

year and after every crop. To simply put, we use fertilizers to provide nutrition to the soil, to

balance the nutrients for better produce quality and higher yield, they are water-soluble and can

easily dissolve in the soil. Hence, they are easily absorbed by the plants (Byju’s, 2011)

Disadvantages of Fertilizers

Organic fertilizer is usually made from plant or animal waste – think manure or

compost. They can also be highly processed products with a compost or manure base. Not all

products are created equally and many organic products produce inconsistent results. Make sure

you are selecting a product that is industry vetted by reviewing any university studies or case

studies. The level of nutrients present in organic fertilizer is often low. In addition, the nutrients
14

are usually complexed in organic chemical structure; this means using organic fertilizer may not

produce the pop of color seen with a chemical fertilizer. Using an organic fertilizer is a process,

not an event. While you can produce your own compost, it’s a messy and complicated process

that often leads to an inconsistent product and end-result. Natural fertilizers are slow to break

down into the nutrients the growing garden requires. Many natural fertilizers, such as manure,

seaweed or fish oil, are quite smelly and are too offensive to use on indoor plants. Gathering

natural materials, such as seaweed, grass clippings and leaves, to add to the compost pile is

labor-intensive and time-consuming. Distribution of nutrients in organic fertilizer varies. Organic

materials break down at different rates, so the composition and content of organic fertilizer is

never consistent. It is a misconception to believe that just because a fertilizer is organic, it is

automatically safer. Organic fertilizer, if you apply it incorrectly, can contribute to surface and

groundwater contamination, create a nutritional imbalance in the soil and cause salt burns.

(Kaitlyn Ersek, 2017). Commercial chemical fertilizers are more expensive than natural

fertilizers. They may contain ingredients that may be toxic to the skin or respiratory system. You

also need to mix and measure them accurately. If you use too much, you can kill your plants.

Chemical fertilizers can build up in the soil, causing long-term imbalances in soil pH and

fertility. The disadvantage of using inorganic fertilizers is the problem of leeching, i.e. the
15

fertilizer and the nutrients getting washed away, is much more prevalent when inorganic

fertilizers are used. This is because in inorganic fertilizers, the nutrients are already in their most

basic components, and hence, can be washed away easily, if the plant roots are over watered or

watered with force. (Anonymous, n.d.).

Synthesis

The researchers found out that fertilizers are such a big help to farmers in the field and

also to people who love to plant in their own homes because it helps their crops and plants to

grow more healthier and be able to bear fruits for other people. Fertilizers not only help the

plants to have more nutrients, but also helps increase soil fertility in every land so it can be

plantable. There are also so many easy ways for them to make their own fertilizers so spending

money won’t be a problem. If you have a pet dog or a cat, you can easily use their waste as a

fertilizer to your plants but, this sometimes can be too offensive in our physical senses as these

wastes can affect the smell of your surroundings and may pollute the air. The researchers also

found out that as much as many of these advantages a fertilizer can do, there are also some bad

side effects to its environment. These disadvantages are mainly from the different types or the

kinds of fertilizers we used or bought. There are 2 types of fertilizers which are the Organic and

Inorganic Fertilizers. Basically, the organic fertilizers are mainly composed of natural things like

the compost waste of animals and other animal products. These types of fertilizers are a great

source of nutrients, although it may take a bit more time to build up your soil. The best benefit

you will get in these types is that you can make this at home. Inorganic fertilizers are types of
fertilizers that include other sorts of chemicals and other nutrients. Each kind has its own purpose

based on their chemical composition; the Nitrogen fertilizer is responsible for the growth of the

plant, the Phosphorus fertilizer helps strengthen the roots and stem of the plant, and lastly the

Potassium fertilizer which helps the plant’s roots grow deeper and stronger and also protect the

plants when deprived of other nutrients.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This research is a collective of important details discussing what potential is, fertilizers in

definition and their types, the banana peels and their components, the banana peel fertilizer’s

involvement in gardens and planting crops. A small questionnaire was made to get a number of

civil opinions aside from the studies of professionals on the case of this study.

Participants of the Study

Aside from the respectful researchers, three (3) individuals with a background on

planting were questioned, namely, Mrs. Salvacion Romano Aranas, her husband Mr. Alexander

Tolosa Aranas and Ms. Prescilla Llaguno Tolosa.

Instruments of the Study

A face-to-face interview was conducted at the neighborhood of Phase 1 Eastwood

Greenview, San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal. The researchers interviewed 3 people to know their

insights about banana peel as fertilizers and if they would consider using it. It includes the
experience, and opinion of the respondents. The first question asks about experiencing the use of

fertilizers. The second asks for preference on the use of fertilizers if it is chemical or organic.

Lastly, asking their insights if they approve about using banana peels as fertilizers.

Data gathering collections

The data gathering was conducted during the Fourth quarter of the school year

2020-2021 from the second week of April. These are the steps that the researchers go through in

order to gather the data collected. The researchers have a neighborhood that is fond of planting,

luckily there are people who do planting. Then the researchers asked for consent if they’re

willing to answer the questions. The interview includes technology; a tablet, for questions and

notes of the answers as evidence to validate the gathered data.

21

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION OF FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter shows the result of the survey conducted in the study of the potential of

banana peels as fertilizer as perceived by selected 4th-year junior high school students of St.

Joseph’s College of Rodriguez who are conducting research for educational purposes for the

school year 2020-2021. The tables and graphs presented are in accordance with the order being

stated in the Statement of the Problem. To appropriately finish this study, it is essential to analyze

and deliberate the gathered information to produce different subjects that will answer the

Statement of the Problem.

The components of banana peel that have the power to boost the growth of plants

naturally.

The banana peels have the highest organic sources of potassium. Potassium helps plants

in moving supplements and water between cells. Potassium reinforces plants' stems and

furthermore wards off sickness. It is particularly essential to making flowers, and even makes

food grown from the ground better and taste better. Potassium will even make your plants more
22

impervious to drought. Without enough potassium, plants will grow ineffectively all in all.

Potassium expands the protein substance of your plants.

Banana peels are useful for gardens since they contain 42% potassium curtailed to its

logical scientific name K, one of the three significant segments of compost alongside nitrogen

(N) and phosphorus (P), and appeared on manure names as NPK. Indeed, banana peels have the

most noteworthy natural wellsprings of potassium. It also has Vitamin B6. Vitamin B12.

Magnesium,. Fiber, and Protein.

How to make banana peel fertilizer effective and to bring more nutrients to plants.

It is simply hard to make it more viable on the grounds that it requires numerous days to

become fertilizer and you will initially examine the means of making manure. With regards to

trouble simply make sure to confide simultaneously. Fertilizing the soil with banana peel is just

about as simple as basically throwing your extra banana peel into the manure. You can throw

them as whole, however know that they may take more time to compost thusly. You can

accelerate the fertilizing the soil interaction by cutting up the banana strips into more modest

pieces.
23

Defining Potential

Potential is the existing possibility or the capability of development into actuality

potential benefits. It is something that can develop into actual (Merriam Webster, 1828). If you

say that something has potential, you mean that they have the necessary abilities or qualities to

become successful or useful in the future (Collins, 2008). In Lewin’s theory (Lewin, 1938) the

term potentiality is used to describe the psychological force that pushes an individual toward a

target area. Research potential is one of the least studied categories in psychology. The difficulty

of denying it consists primarily in identifying those exact qualities and features of the subject’s

psyche that are combined to perform the function of scientific-research activity. Moreover, one

should take into consideration the fluid nature of research potential — that is, the changes it

undergoes under the influence of a person’s living and learning conditions, peculiar goals, and

the “uniqueness” of the result — along with the criteria of novelty and uncertainty. (“Research

Potential and Cognitive Features of Students”, 2014).

24

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of the findings in the research, the conclusion drawn

and the recommendations to widen the knowledge about this study.

Summary of Findings

The important findings of this study are follows which include the benefits and ability of

banana peels as fertilizers, different types of fertilizers, advantages and disadvantages of using

fertilizers and especially the potential of banana peel as a fertilizer. It also includes the

experiences, and perceptions of the respondents. In this situation today, we often see people

caring for their plants and it becomes their hobby so it is convenient for them to use banana peels

for their plants. Based on those in the agricultural field using banana peels is convenient but

sometimes it is only good for specific plants like tomatoes. Based on the respondents it is wise to

use banana peels because first it is organic and high in potassium that makes the plant strong, it

can also save from pollution instead of throwing it away and making someone fall so it is good if

you will use it as fertilizer.

25

Conclusions

Based on all the information the researchers gathered, the researchers concluded that making

banana peels as fertilizer is a great help in this world especially of the situations now. All people

must help each other to grow more plants and make a goal of having healthy air pollution. People

see that there are many fertilizers that can cultivate our plants but they don’t know the chemicals

inside it may be toxic. The researchers concluded that banana peels are easy to make it as

fertilizers not only can benefit all crops but to all surroundings. It is only difficult to make it

more effective because it takes many days to become a fertilizer and you will first study the steps

of making a fertilizer. When it comes to difficulty just remember to trust the process.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions presented the researchers suggest some

recommendations.

For those who are in the agricultural field, to improve their productivity they will plant

more crops because in this method their farm or plants will cultivate more.

For those who are at home, they must tolerate the heat to allow the plants to maintain their

yields, and have water management. When watering the plant make sure that it is not too much

and not too inadequate. After that they can put the banana peel fertilizer to nourish it.

For those students, make sure to be gentle when planting and when using banana peel. Make

sure that the students take responsibility for it.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

PRESCILLA LLAGUNO TOLOSA

Q1: Since you plant, do you use fertilizers?

Hindi naman.

Q2: If you are / not using fertilizers, what would you prefer to use as a fertilizer, organic

or chemical? Why?

Organic. Para healthy.

Q3:Would you use banana peels as fertilizers? What are your insights?

Yes. Maganda kasi organic.

31

SALVACIÓN ROMANO ARANAS

Q1: Since you plant, do you use fertilizers?

Hindi.

Q2: If you are / not using fertilizers, what would you prefer to use as a fertilizer, organic

or chemical? Why?

Organic. Kasi galing lang naman yun sa mga nabubulok na prutas o gulay, hindi

ka gagastos ng malaki para bumili ng mismong fertilizer.

Q3:Would you use banana peels as fertilizers? What are your insights?

Oo syempre, organic yun eh. Magandang gamitin yun kasi kapag kami din ni Alex

nagtanim yung mga nabubulok na prutas o gulay ilagay namin sa tubig, ipapalibot niya sa

tanim namin dun sa kabilang lote.

ALEXANDER TOLOSA ARANAS

Q1: Since you plant, do you use fertilizers?

Hindi.
32

Q2: If you are / not using fertilizers, what would you prefer to use as a fertilizer, organic

or chemical? Why?

Q3:Would you use banana peels as fertilizers? What are your insights?

Oo, ang tamang paggamit diyan, hatiin mo siya ng maliliit na piraso tapos ilagay

mo sa garapon lagyan ng tubig tapos patagalin mo ng mga ilang araw, at saka mo i-spray

o ilagay sa tanim.
