COUNSELOR POSITION
2011
(Tenure Track)

Description of Position:

East Los Angeles Community College is seeking a full time permanent D Basis
Counselor Position is to begin approximately August 2011 .The major responsibility of
the candidate is to provide comprehensive, academic and vocational counseling services
to a diverse and multicultural student population. Assignment may include day, evening,
and weekend duties at all District sites. All Counseling Faculty are expected to participate
actively in the counseling departmental activities, members in the general intellectual life,
and governance of the college. Position is contingent upon funding and is subject to
change.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Counseling or related areas (Rehabilitation, Clinical Psychology,


Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development,
California licensed Marriage Family and Child Care or California licensed Marriage and
Family Therapist (MFT).)

A medical evaluation indicating fitness to work in the district is required for new
employees at the expense of the candidate.

Required knowledge, skills, experience and abilities:

ƒ Must have two full years of paid experience post Master’s Degree as a
Counselor in a Higher Educational setting.
ƒ Strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued
innovation and improvement of successful counseling and teaching.
ƒ Ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advance
technology utilized in providing high quality Counseling and instruction and the
understanding and successful use of learning technology.
ƒ Ability to plan, coordinate and implement Counseling projects and special events.
ƒ Ability to communicate professionally and clearly with students and staff, both
orally and in written form. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive
and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students,
faculty administrators and staff), as well as, off-campus community and
educational partners.
ƒ Demonstrates sensitivity and ability to motivate, counsel, and teach traditionally
underrepresented student from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
ƒ Experience working as a team member on departmental committees and campus-
wide groups, and with community leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Department Chairperson and the Vice President of Student
Services duties may include but are not limited to:
ƒ Assist students in planning immediate and long-range educational goals.
ƒ Engage students in a process of self-assessment, career and vocational exploration
to facilitate career decision making choices.
ƒ Teach personal development courses to include: academic, personal, or career
planning and decision-making skills.
ƒ Counseling of probationary and subject to dismissal students.
ƒ Conduct new and continuing student orientations.
ƒ Evaluate transcripts in collaboration with the graduation office and other
universities.
ƒ Maintenance in current knowledge in subject matter area and effective student
support strategies/ interventions.
ƒ Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary and Benefits

The basic salary range is from $57,120 to $88,932 annually. An excellent package of
benefits is provided for employees and their dependents. Coverage includes: medical
(choice of plans) dental, vision, employee assistance plan, salary continuation, and life
insurance.

designee and a second interview will be conducted by the President and the Vice
