Classifying Materials According to Use


Background Information for Learners
You have learned previously that matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter
has different properties that make them different from one another. Some types of matter have
properties that make them good materials for producing useful products. Other types have
properties that make them harmful.
The usefulness of material depends on its properties. You use different materials at work at
school and at home.
It is important to know the uses of a certain material to avoid accident that can harm you,
people around you and the environment.

Basic Characteristics of Description


Materials
Rough Uneven surface
Smooth Even surface
Strong/Rigid Difficult to break; cannot be bent
Magnetic Attracted to a magnet
Shiny Reflects light
Dull Lacking brightness
Natural Not man-made
Synthetic Man-made
Opaque You cannot completely see through it
Transparent You can completely see through it
Translucent You can see through it a bit
Absorbent Soaks up water
Waterproof Does not soak up water or let water through it

Household materials can be grouped as follows according to their use:
