Coarse and fine aggregate specimen
Fine Aggregate
1. Dry sample to constant mass
2. Nest appropriate sieves in order of decreasing size
3. Place sample on top sieve
4. Agitate sieve by hand or mechanical methods
5. Do not overload any individual sieves, use guard sieves or test sample in
increments
6. For mixtures of coarse and fine aggregate, split the portion of the sample finer that the
4. 75 mm (No: 4) sieve necessary
7. Sieve until not more than 0.5% (1.0% for ASTM CI36) by mass of retained particles
pass a given Aww with a minute of agitation (usually 7-10 minutes)
8. Determine the mass of material retained on each sieve to the nearest 0.1%
9. Total the mass of all individual size increments and check that it is within 0.3 % of the
original sample size.
10. Compute the percentage retained on each sieve.
11. Calculate the percentages passing each sieve to the nearest 0.1% based on the total mass
of the original dry sample.
12. Calculate the fineness modulus and report to the nearest 0.01.
13. Plot
Coarse Aggregate
1. Take 1000g of aggregate sample using the weighing scale
2. After reading, record it in an observation sheet
3. Place the sample in the set IS sieve, already arrange in order with 20mm sieve on the
top and 4.75 sieve at the bottom
4. Shake the complete assembly by giving strong motion so that each particles
gets sufficient chances to pass to the sieve opening, after proper sieving,
fraction of aggregate of different sizes will retain on different sieves
5. Weigh the retained aggregates on each sieve and record reading on the
observation sheet.
6. Compute for the percentage retained on each sieve.
7. Compute the cumulative percentage retained and the percent passing.
8. Plot the sieve number against the cumulative percent retained and percent passing.
VI. Data and Results:
Fine Aggregates
Coarse Aggregate
CUMULATATIVE = S1+S2
20 mm =0
16 mm =0 + 4.4 = 4.4
12.5 mm = 4.4 + 49.2 = 53.6
10 mm = 53.6 + 39.6 = 93.2
4.75 mm = 93.2 + 6 = 99.2
