Learning Competency:
Use the MS Excel software:
a. Creating Charts: Bar and Column

What I Need to Know

There are things around us that we take into consideration.

For instance, data analysis through gathered and encoded data.
Sometimes dealing such concerns takes time and thorough focus
on minor details are of dire need of attention. This encompasses the
authenticity of results and fast track of acquiring reliable results.

Specifically, requiring software that can address such need is

a must in order to eliminate misconceptions and false results in
general. Proper presentation and distribution of values on its desired
places makes a presentation more vivid and catchy to its recipients.
Learning are of more value and easy as convenience and
understanding are the top most priority in learning delivery.
Constructing Graphs and charts are elements of actual distribution
of values in an MS Excel as one of its salient features where
conclusion are easily achieved and supported.

This toolkit will guide you on how to be more observant of the

things around you. Keen observation is one way of understanding
science processes like measuring, computing, inferring,
generalizing and drawing conclusions. These science processes
can help you acquire and develop higher order thinking skills.

After going through this learning toolkit, you are expected to:
1. identify bar graph and column chart and its features;
2. differentiate bar graph and column chart; and
3. create a bar graph and column chart using MS Excel.

What is It

Learning comes when right tool is being utilize on a specific

task. This encompasses factual and fast acquirement of desired
result based from gathered data on a specific concern. Numeracy,
data encoding, randomization, calculation and giving system
towards an information being collected are made easy.

Today various software’s and apps are put

on field to make learning easy and convenient
to record, analyze and store such numeric data
and one of this is the Microsoft Excel or the
Spreadsheet software.

Microsoft Excel has its various salient features which are user
friendly by nature. This promotes prompt and easy usage towards
various concerns regarding encoding, calculations, data sorting and
any other related stuff.

One of the basic feature of an MS Excel is converting tabular

data into charts or graphs.

What is a Chart?
In Microsoft Excel, a chart is often called a graph. It is a visual
representation of data from a worksheet that can bring more
understanding to the data than just looking at the numbers.

A chart is a powerful tool that allows you to visually display

data in a variety of different chart formats such as Bar, Column, Pie,
Line, Area, Doughnut, Scatter, Surface, or Radar charts. With Excel,
it is easy to create a chart.

A graph can be defined as a pictorial representation or a

diagram that represents data or values in an organized
manner. The points on the graph often represent the relationship
between two or more things. One of the basic type of graph to be
done in an MS Excel if the Bar graph also termed as the Column
graph.

What is a Bar Graph?

A bar chart is a graph that shows horizontal bars with the
axis values for the bars displayed on the bottom of the graph. It is a
graphical object used to represent the data in your Excel
spreadsheet which is used to compare values across categories.

A bar graph can be defined as a chart or a graphical

representation of data, quantities or numbers using bars and used
to compare and contrast numbers, frequencies or other measures
of distinct categories of data.

What is a Column Chart?

A column chart is a data visualization where each category is
represented by a rectangle, with the height of the rectangle being
proportional to the values being plotted. Column charts are also
known as vertical bar charts.
Column charts use vertical bars to show comparison between
categories or things. One axis displays the categories being
compared, the other, the data values. They are effective for showing

the situation at a point in time. If something can be counted, it can
be represented in a column chart, for example, the number of
products sold or hits on a website.
Column charts are effective for emphasizing the difference
between values. Used to compare change between groups over
time, column charts are easiest to read when the differences in data
value are relatively large.
Column charts can be created in standard, stacked, or
percentage formats. Each format displays the same data in a
different way, making it easier to make comparisons or see patterns
emerging in the data.
