PROJECT DESCRIPTION

PROJECT: LAKE HOUSE RECORDING STUDIOS

LOCATION: ASBURY PARK, NJ, U.S.A

committed to building a cohesive infrastructure for his hometown music scene, producer/
songwriter Jon Leidersdorff discovered an abandoned warehouse in downtown Asbury Park, and
envisioned it as a multi-purpose center for a collective of music business locals.

Built in the 1920s and converted to a warehouse in the 1960s, the building was gutted and
completely renovated to house a two-studio facility that will become a multi-purpose centre.

Instead of adding a new floor to the roof, the key to expansion was to ‘grow down.’ Eliminating
the ground floor truck entrance, and dropping the floor 7 ½ feet enabled them to sink steel
girders to support a 6” thick concrete slab at the 16 ft. height. This created an entirely new 5000
sq, ft, 2nd floor, which Leiders dorff split with primary tenant, the Lakehouse Music Academy
(LHMA). This rock solid, acoustically isolated space was ideal for the recording studios, an
apartment/lounge, and the school. The third floor became rehearsal rooms, and additional offices.

The completed Lake house North Studio
comprises a variable acoustics Live Room and
a 440-sq-ft Control Room capped by a
rectangular, fabric covered ceiling cloud
with triangular wings, custom designed by
Ballos.
The South Studio features a 300-sq-ft Control Room with an SSL Matrix Console, a large
complement of outboard gear and a 140-sq-ft live room.

ACOUSTIC TREATMENT OF THE STUDIO

Studio Sliding Glass Doors

the sliding glass doors offer STC values of 65, making the doors as good as many recording
studio walls. Also available in multi-track telescoping configurations, the sliding glass doors
perform better and are more economical than steel doors. All of the recording studio door panels are
removable, meaning we can use the entire opening to move oversized items such as pianos into the
recording studio area easily.

Recording Studio Windows

Our studio windows offer STC values of 64. We offer
many different options and configurations to address all
of your various design requirements. Low-iron super
clear (no green tint) glass is standard in all our windows
and doors. It has incredible low frequency noise
reduction

Acoustic Steel Doors

The recording studio acoustic steel doors have also set
new world records for noise abatement. We get an
STC of 56 while staying with the door industry
standard thickness of 1.75”. Standard thickness means
we can accommodate any door hardware!

Wall and ceiling treatment

Wall and ceiling are also
designed by absorbtive material.

Conclusion
I understand acoustic consideration is a very important aspect for building like HAVC and other
aspects because it affects the comfort of the users. In this case study I realize that perfect
acoustics are necessary in the recording studio, otherwise the sound of the vocals, musical
instruments or spoken passages will sound distorted. a quiet environment is important to
understand his opponent acoustically well. So they used acoustic treatments in every single
element of the studio. They used sound absorbant wall and ceiling which decrease the
reverberation of sound which is unwanted on spaces like recording studio.

Even though we treat a walls or ceiling of a room air can pass through openings that mean noise
can be transmitted. Therefor it is essential to treat windows and doors as well.

As privacy in closed room is measured by STC (sound transmission class) they used sliding door
and window which has STC value of 65 and 64 respectively that is completely sound proofing as
the studio walls are. They also use acoustic steel doors.

In designing recording studio the most important concept is isolation. Isolation of the building
from the environment, and isolation of the rooms inside the building one from another.
