Design of absorption tower(packed)

Theory:

Absorption packed towers are used for different mass transfer operations such
as distillation and absorption. The tower consists of a vertically positioned
cylindrical shell filled with packing.
The packed tower is a continuous contact type gas-liquid mass transfer
equipment, which makes the two-phase composition change continuously
along the tower height. It is used for different mass transfer operations such as
distillation and absorption. The tower consists of a vertically positioned
cylindrical shell filled with packing. In the normal condition, the gas phase
presents continuous phase while the liquid phase presents dispersed phase.
Water flows downwards through a packing, counter-current to an air flow
which strips the VOCs into the gas phase and discharges them through the top
of the tower. The treated water is collected at the bottom of the tower.
Properties

Data given:
According to our group (gr. No. 11):
Feed composition: SO2 – 6% dry air – 94%
SO2 in exit gas – 0.1%
Feed = 475 kg/hr
Ceramic Raschig ring packings = 1 inch
Flooding velocity = 50%
Water flow rate = 2*(minimum flow rate required for a tower of infinite
height)
T = 30o C P = 1 atm
Properties:
For calculating the diameter, The Colburn-Drew volumetric mass transfer
coefficient at the given conditions are:

For ceramic Raschig ring packings of 1 inch: Fp = 596.6 m-1 a = 56 ft2/ft3
