Summary
On 01/28/2022, this facility (Hampton Inn) had an incident of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.
This effected approximately nine (9) persons. These individuals were either taken to a medical
facility or received medical care. Marysville FD crews found CO levels at or about 1100-1300 parts
per million (PPM) in the 1st floor and pool area. On the second (2nd) floor, CO readings were
documented at 600 PPM and third (3rd) floor - 500 PPM. These levels were indicated on the
Marysville FD incident report. These levels are consistent with major negative effects to humans.
The hotel was evacuated and all utilities were shut off.
On 01/30/2022, the hotel stated they had Chief Riley, MFD come to the facility and assess for
re-opening. On that date, the hotel re-opened. On 01/31/2022, I--along with the other individuals
listed above--conducted an follow-up. I received a document from the Health Department indicating
the pool area was ordered closed on December 13, 2021. No authorization was obtained to begin
using this area. I inspected the pool equipment room. It was found to have a plastic bag over the
fresh air intake. Further, the CO detector in place was not functioning, when tested. A new CO
detector was placed in this room and alerted upon functional check. Speaking with Justin Graham,
he noted that the pool water temperature was decreasing. Maintenance was in the process of
switching the water heaters (the spa heater to the pool heater). An issue occurred with blowing a
fuse(s) and required another maintenance person to come from another facility. The other
maintenance person got the heater working, on Thursday (01/27/2022).
With my Agency issued CO monitor, no CO levels were noted throughout my time at the hotel.
While speaking with Sam Cronk, CBO, he noted this facility had a permit expire in July of 2021.
When I asked Justin to show me the room on the first floor, the room appeared to be completed.
Sam stated that the last inspections were deficient and required inspection(s). However, all electrical,
fire separation, fire protection systems/devices, and plumbing were completed and covered, at this
time. This is a violation of the OFC, as noted in the violation section of this report. Permits need to
be obtained or a Citation/NOV/NOH will be issued and possible revocation of hotel/motel license
could occur.
A re-inspection will be conducted to verify violation(s) status. The incident remains under
investigation by the Marysville PD, FD, Health Department, and Building Department.
Inspection complete.
