The process of communication requires competence in creating meaning and
organization of thoughts, putting these in oral or written form to acquire good
and effective communication

We must have the skills (competence in creating meaning and organization of

thoughts, putting these in oral or written form) to acquire good and effective
communication.

The communicator should also consider the person or the audience he/she is
communicating with

The goal in communication is clarity of expression and understanding

Persons who are exchanging info, thoughts, ideas, opinions, or even

emotions/feelings should know how to communicate well to achieve understanding

Clarity of ideas would lead to a harmonious relationship

Communication goes through stages in the transmission of messages. It won't

progress without the other elements

Takes place everywhere and anytime, Context.

Implies dynamics and change

Indicates parts interacting and influencing each other to function as a whole.

The communication process involves steps on how to convey messages

The components of communication are interdependent

The Communication Process 4

Communication involves two parties: The sender and the receiver

It requires both parties to have:

Past Experience

Culture

Attitudes

Values

Knowledge

Feelings

Sender - gives/sends the message

Receiver - gives/receives feedback

The feedback helps the communicators makes sure that the message has
been decoded correctly

Communication channel describes the process or way in which people can

communicate

The medium that we are using to communicate with others

Face to face or through various media

Phone calls,

Texts messages,

E-mail,

web or the internet including social media,

Facebook,

Twitter

Radio and TV,

Written Letters,

Brochures and reports

The appropriate communication channel is vital for effective communication

The Communication Process 5

Components of Communication
The basic components of the communication process are:

1. Communicators,

a. Sender

b. Receiver

2. Message,

3. Channel,

4. Feedback,

5. Noise,

6. Situation,

7. The Interdependence of all the elements in the process.

The components are interrelated and work systematically

Lasswell's Communication Model

By Harold D. Lasswell.

A communication theorist

introduced the communication that has been regarded as the most influential
communication model.

A Linear Model

1. The source/sender encodes the message that will be transferred

The sender is the source of the message

The information must be encoded must be suitable to the channel

2. The means of an idea that will be transferred is called the message

3. The message is then transferred through the medium/channel

Message sent through the medium or channel

The Communication Process 6

4. The decoder/receiver then decodes the message to create meaning and
understanding to have an impact or effect

Understand and accept the meaning and importance of the message

5. The feedback will then be created due to the effect of the message

The feedback may be wrong if there is noise in between

Clarity of Ideas leads to a harmonious relationship

Message Channels
Should be encoded to a method carried out by a communication channel

it can be spoken words

or through written communication for complex information

The use of Language should be taken to consideration

important to transfer the message clearly

eliminate causes of confusion and misunderstanding

The general public will decode and understand the message in different ways

Experience and understanding of the message’s context, psychological state, and

the time and place of receipt as well as many other potential factors greatly affect
the decoding process.

Understanding how the message will be translated, and anticipating as many of the
potential sources of misunderstanding as possible, is the art of a successful
communicator.

Ability to understand how the elements of communication are affected by others

Elements of the Communication Process

Feedback
Expected from the receivers/decoders.

The response saying the understanding of the information sent.

either through verbal or non-verbal

The Communication Process 7

Assessing whether the message was understood as intended

in case there is confusion, it can be corrected.

Noise
Barriers that interfere with the communication process.

Anything that could block the communication process

1. Internal Noise - From you

happens when something is bothering you.

2. External Noise - From others

is the noise or interference in the surroundings.

Context
the situation or setting in which communication is taking place.

Expectation from a given situation based on experience.
