1. 𝑦 2 − 4𝑥 − 8𝑦 + 12 = 0

a. Standard Equation
𝑦 2 − 8𝑦 − 4𝑥 + 12 = 0
𝑦 2 − 8𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 12
𝑦 2 − 8𝑦 + 16 = 4𝑥 − 12 + 16
(𝒚 − 𝟒)𝟐 = 𝟒(𝒙 + 𝟏)

𝐼𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 4𝑝(𝑥 − ℎ)

ℎ = −1
𝑘=4
4𝑝 = 4
2𝑝 = 2
𝑝=1

b. Opening
The parabola opens to the right

c. Vertex
From the standard equation:
ℎ=−1 and 𝑘=4
𝑉(ℎ,𝑘)
𝑽(−1,4)

d. Focus
The focus is 𝑝 units away from the vertex. Since 𝑝=1 and the opening of the parabola is
To the right, the focus must be located 1 unit to the right of 𝑽(−1,4). Thus,
𝐹(−1+1,4)
𝑭(0,4)

e. Ends of the Latus Rectum

The ends of the latus rectum are 2𝑝 units away from the focus. Since 2𝑝=2 and the opening of the
parabola is to the right, the ends of the latus rectum must be located 2 units up and down from the focus
𝐹(0,4). Thus,
𝐿𝑅1(0,4+2);𝐿𝑅2(0,4−2)
𝑳𝑹𝟏(0,6);𝑳𝑹𝟐(0,2)

f. Axis of Symmetry
y=k
y=4

g. Directrix
Since the form is (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 4𝑝(𝑥 − ℎ), D: 𝑥 = ℎ − 𝑝
𝑥 =ℎ−𝑝
𝑥 = −1 − 1
𝒙 = −𝟐

2. 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟖𝒚 − 𝟒 = 𝟎

a. Standard Equation
𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 8𝑦 − 4 = 0
𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 = 8𝑦 + 4
𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 4 = 8𝑦 + 4 + 4
(𝒙 − 𝟐)𝟐 = 𝟖(𝒚 + 𝟏)

𝐼𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 (𝑥 − ℎ)2 = 4𝑝(𝑦 − 𝑘)

ℎ= 2
𝑘 = −1
4𝑝 = 8
2𝑝 = 4
𝑝=2

b. Opening
The parabola opens upward

c. Vertex
From the standard equation:
ℎ=2 and 𝑘=−1
𝑉(ℎ,𝑘)
𝑽(2,−1)

d. Focus
The focus is 𝑝 units away from the vertex. Since 𝑝=2 and the opening of the parabola is
upward, the focus must be located 2 units above of 𝑽(2, −1). Thus,
𝐹(2, −1+2)
𝑭(2,1)

e. Ends of the Latus Rectum

The ends of the latus rectum are 2𝑝 units away from the focus. Since 2𝑝=4 and the opening of the
parabola is upward, the ends of the latus rectum must be located 2 units right and left from the focus
𝐹(2,1). Thus,
𝐿𝑅1(2+4,1);𝐿𝑅2(2−4,1)
𝑳𝑹𝟏(6,1);𝑳𝑹𝟐(−2,1)

f. Axis of Symmetry
x=h
x=2

g. Directrix
Since the form is (𝑥 − ℎ)2 = 4𝑝(𝑦 − 𝑘), D: 𝑦 = 𝑘 − 𝑝
𝑦 =𝑘−𝑝
𝑦 = −1 − 2
𝒚 = −𝟑

𝑦 2 − 2𝑦 + 1 = −12𝑥 − 25 + 1
(𝒚 − 𝟏)𝟐 = −𝟏𝟐(𝒙 + 𝟐)

𝐼𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = −4𝑝(𝑥 − ℎ)

ℎ = −2
𝑘=1
4𝑝 = 12
2𝑝 = 6
𝑝=3

b. Opening
The parabola opens to the left

c. Vertex
From the standard equation:
ℎ=−2 and 𝑘=1
𝑉(ℎ,𝑘)
𝑽(−2,1)

d. Focus
The focus is 𝑝 units away from the vertex. Since 𝑝=3 and the opening of the parabola is
To the left, the focus must be located 3 units to the left of 𝑽(−2,1). Thus,
𝐹(−2−3,1)
𝑭(−𝟓,1)

e. Ends of the Latus Rectum

The ends of the latus rectum are 2𝑝 units away from the focus. Since 2𝑝=6 and the opening of the
parabola is to the left, the ends of the latus rectum must be located 2 units up and down from the focus
𝐹(−𝟓,1). Thus,
𝐿𝑅1(=−5,1+6);𝐿𝑅2(−5,1−6)
𝑳𝑹𝟏(−5,7);𝑳𝑹𝟐(−5, −5)
f. Axis of Symmetry

𝑦 2 − 2𝑦 + 1 = 8𝑥 − 33 + 1
(𝒚 − 𝟏)𝟐 = 𝟖(𝒙 − 𝟒)

𝐼𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚 (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 4𝑝(𝑥 − ℎ)

ℎ= 4
𝑘=1
4𝑝 = 8
2𝑝 = 4
𝑝=2

b. Opening
The parabola opens to the right

c. Vertex
From the standard equation:
ℎ=4 and 𝑘=1
𝑉(ℎ,𝑘)
𝑽(𝟒,1)

d. Focus
The focus is 𝑝 units away from the vertex. Since 𝑝=2 and the opening of the parabola is

𝐹(4+2,1)
𝑭(6,1)

e. Ends of the Latus Rectum

The ends of the latus rectum are 2𝑝 units away from the focus. Since 2𝑝=4 and the opening of the
parabola is to the right, the ends of the latus rectum must be located 4 units up and down from the focus
