Q1 and Q2.

Research basically includes a careful and rigorous process of inquiry/investigation

for knowledge production and sharing. Kerlinger proposed that research may be scientific and
non-scientific – that is, a research which utilizes the scientific method is “scientific”, if does not,
then, it’s “non-scientific.”
As a researcher-scholar and academician, do you totally agree with Kerlinger’s proposition? Do
we really have to classify research as “scientific” and “non-scientific”? Or should we say that all
research undertakings are scientific regardless of the design and method/s used?
Research has been the backbone in developing new knowledge and theoretical propositions
that are deemed necessary in solving problems that are underlying in various aspects. With the
fast-paced challenges in the academia, research has become the primary source in the creation
of solution to these challenges. Also, with the utilization of scientific investigation, research
outcomes are validly empirical and systematic in nature. Thus, research is scientific.
However, regardless of the method/s and design used, researches that follow a systematic and
controlled approaches in data gathering are scientific research. However, the need to classify
whether a research is “scientific” or “non-scientific” must never be disregarded, since there have
been a growing demand of scholarly work and researches that utilizes the empirical use of
scientific investigation. Kerlinger defined scientific research as “systematic, controlled, empirical
and controlled investigation of hypothetical proposition about the presumed relations among
natural phenomena.”
Moreover, for other scholars, research is also a work of art. Is research purely science? Or is it
both an art and a science? Elucidate your thoughts.
Research is an art, as it incites and touches the creativity and ingenuity of human mind. And,
with the application of scientific approaches as its driving force, research has become genuine
and is able to arrive at possible solutions to prevailing problems.
Q3. In your readings, Manheim and Kerlinger offered comprehensive definitions of research.
However, Kerlinger’s definition focused on research as a “scientific” endeavor. Taking into
account Kerlinger’s discussion, how would you classify researches along language and literary
studies/scholarship? Are they purely scientific? Non-scientific?
Language and literary researches/studies are scientific when it utilizes approaches that are
purely scientific in nature .But, language and literature studies does not have to be scientific at
all times, some researches/studies utilizes “non-scientific” approach to provide valid research
outcomes.
