Course Objectives

The IELTS Preparation course is designed for students from upper-intermediate to


advanced levels to prepare them to successfully sit the IELTS test.

Course Prerequisites
It is recommended that students’ English proficiency is equivalent to a level between
Upper-intermediate and Proficiency (B2 to C1 in the Common European Framework
of Reference).

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this program, students are expected to:
● Become familiarised with the structure and content of the IELTS test
● Learn effective test-taking strategies and skills
● Enhance autonomous learning

Content and Teaching Method


This is a skills-based course with the goal of developing the four language skills of
listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Content depends on needs analysis and is
subject to on-going change as the course evolves. In general, students will be engaged
in activities that aim to develop the four skills, i.e., listening, reading, speaking and
writing. The focus is going to be on improving students’ productive skills which pose
more of a challenge to them.

First Semester
UNIT ONE Writing about Graphs in the IELTS Writing Exam
Lesson 1: Writing the introduction and the overview
Lesson 2: Analysing and Commenting on Data
Reviewing Assignments (20 % of the total grade)
Lesson 3: Comparative Graphs
UNIT TWO The Reading Comprehension Exam
Lesson 1: Text Types and Reading Strategies
Lesson 2: Types of Questions
Test 1 Reading Comprehension (40 % of the total grade)
UNIT THREE The Advantages and Disadvantages Essay
Lesson 1: Structuring your Essay
Lesson 2: Writing the introduction and the conclusion
Lesson 3: Linking ideas
Test 2: Essay Writing (40 % of the total grade)
Second Semester
UNIT FOUR Writing about Maps and Processes in the IELTS Exam
Lesson 1: Writing about a Map
Lesson2: Writing about a Process
Reviewing Assignments (20 % of the total grade)
UNIT FIVE The Listening and Reading IELTS Exams
Lesson 1: Exam Structure and Types of Questions
Lesson 2: Listening Tips and Strategies
Test 1: Reading Comprehension (40% of the total grade)
UNIT SIX The Discussion Essay
Lesson 1: Writing the introduction and the conclusion
Lesson 2: Contrasting and linking ideas
Test 2: Essay Writing (40% of the total grade)

The course grade will be based on the following elements:
1) Summative Assessment:
● Mid-term written/online IELTS mock tests
2) Formative Assessment:
● Class participation and contribution to the lesson’s content (Assignments)
