Continental Drift Activity Packet Date
Continental Drift Activity Packet Date
Instructions:
You will be piecing together a puzzle of the supercontinent Pangea based on
fossil and rock evidence on the present day continents.
2. Use scissors to cut along the borders of the continents. These are the
approximate shape of the continents after Pangea broke up.
4. When you have assembled Pangea based on the fossil and rock
locations, glue the continents onto your construction paper in the shape of
the supercontinent. Glue the legend to your puzzle.
Questions:
1. What is the idea of Continental Drift?
It is a hypothesis where it describes that the continents drifted apart across the
ocean bed over geological time relative to each other. It explains why there are the
presence of look-alike animals, plants and fossils in different continents.
3. How were the fossil symbols and mountain belts helpful in deciding where
to move the continents?
It is very helpful in locating things that are present in the particular place. It shows
where the land such as mountains connect and then drift apart. Also, the fossils that are
present show the locality of the living species at that time.
4. Why don’t the present shapes of the continents fit perfectly into a
supercontinent?
It doesn’t fit perfectly anymore because of the changes in the geography,
topography of a continent. Also the effects of erosion, earthquakes, converging plates
and others.
5. Which fossil occurs on the most landmasses? What does this suggest
about when these particular continents broke up?
The Glossopteris plant occurs on most land masses. This shows that the climate
around these particular continents are very similar. But if its not, it may have been a
common plant back in the days. It may be also able to adapt well in such conditions.
Evidence or Not?
On the Analyzing Evidence worksheet, read the statement in each box and check
whether the statement is evidence or not in the left columns, and whether is
supports the movements of the continents in the right columns.
