Module 1 Human Development: Meaning, Concepts and Approaches

Application
1. “Growth is an evidence of life.” – If you are not growing, then you cannot be alive. Growing
helps by developing our bones, muscles, tissues and cells. Also, growth can ensure proper
nutrition, if not then, it means that you are not growing well, and this proves that if you grow, that
means you also have life.
2. Development or “Pag-unlad” ay nangangahulugan ng paglago o ebolusyon ng isang bagay.
Ang konsepto ng pag-unlad ay tumutukoy sa isang pisikal, moral o intelektuwal na
pagkakasunod-sunod, kaya maari itong mag-aplay sa isang Gawain, isang tao, isang lipunan o
isang bansa.
3. 5 Major Principles of Human Development from life-s[an perspective and application of each
principle in the teaching learning process.

 Development is lifelong – Learning is a continuous process. As innovation takes place,

each individual must learn to adapt changes in order to get along with the current trends
and situation.
 Development is multidimensional – it involves changes in the individual’s physical
nature, changes in the individual’s thought, intelligence and language and changes in
the individual’s relationship with other people, changes in emotions and personality.
 Development is plastic – Learning is possible throughout the life-span of a person. As an
individual continue to grow, a variety of new knowledge is on the way.
 Development is contextual – As the time goes by, students became more curious with
the things around him/her. The world change as well as the students’ interest on things.
 Development involves growth, maintenance and regulation – as an individual age into
middle and late adulthood, the maintenance and regulation of loss in their capacities
takes center stage away from growth. For example, a 75 year-old man might not aim to
improve his skills and memory in painting but to maintain his independence and ability to
draw.
4. The Illustration shows the (A) Cephalocaudal Pattern- development proceed from head to
toe and (B) Proximodistal Pattern – development proceed from the center outward.

5. A. “Everyman is in certain respects like all other men, like some other men, no other man.”
This quote means that a person should be given equal respect and rights like any other man,
may that man be poor or rich, pretty or hideous and whatever his status. This quote only
reminds us that you are not better than others, so as other not better than you.
B. “Man is an unfinished project.”
From the time we were born, we did not stay the same, in fact we have changed and is
continuously changing. Since we are an “unfinished project”m every day is a day to improve
ourselves and achieve the wholeness of us.
6. As far as my knowledge, traditional approach in human development is closer to truth
because human development show extensive change from birth to adolescence, little or no
change in adulthood and decline in the late old age.
7. Yes, it is. Human development also occurs all throughout the life-span of an individual. It
does not end by adulthood and no development stage dominates the development.

Big Ideas
1. Human development is the pattern of movement or change that begins at conception and
continues through the life span.
2. Four Principles of Human Development

Principle Educational Implication

Development is relatively orderly Development occurs in a relatively orderly
sequence, with later abilities, skills, and
knowledge building on those already
acquired.
While the pattern if development is likely to We can expect individual differences in
be similar, the outcome of developmental developmental characteristics and variation in
process and the rate of development are the ages when people will experience events
likely to vary among individuals. that will influence their development.
Development takes place gradually There is always a gradual change. For
example, a child’s physical growth: adding
inches to their height year by year.
development takes place in unique stages
and it occurs at specific times or ages.
Development as a process is complex Cognitive process involve changes in the
because it is the product of biological, individuals thought, intelligence and
cognitive and socio-emotional process language.

3. Patterns of development
a. The direction of growth following the cephalocaudal pattern is from head to the toe.
b. The direction of growth following the proximodistal pattern is from the center to
outward.
4. Two Approaches to Human Development
Traditional vs Life-span Approach

Concept Approach
Traditional Life-span
Development during Exphasizes extensive change
childhood
Development during Little or no change
Development is lifelong

6. Development as a process is complex because it is the product of biological, cognitive and

socio-emotional process.

7. “By virtue of being born to humanity, every human being has a right to the development and
fulfillment of his potentialities as a human being.”
Develop yourself like how you want to be in the future but never forget your values and the
foundation you used when you’re still starting your progress.
