LESSON 11:

THE HISTORIC SITES AND LANDMARKS RECOGNIZED BY

THE NATIONAL HISTORICAL COMMISSION OF THE
PHILIPPINES

1. What are the main functions or tasks of the NHCP?

The NHCP is mandated to undertake research and publication of Philippine historical

works; educational activities on historical events and personages; restoration, preservation
and conservation of movable and immovable objects of historical value and
implementation of the National Historic Act of the Philippines

2. What historic sites recognized by the NHCP have you visited? What do they reveal about
our historical and/or cultural past?

The NHCP recognizes that historic sites and structures possess cultural value and we know
for a fact that places such as the Fort Santiago, Vigan, Rizal Shrine, Intramuros, Malacañan
Palace, Corregidor and even the EDSA Shrine that marks the 1986 people’s uprising and
revolt against a dictator are now among the landmarks that are recognized for its historic
value

3. Have you been to the National Museum? What can you find in the National Museum
Complex? If not, what educational museum have you visited tell your experience.

The museum houses four main galleries allotted to ethnology and natural history. The
displays range from free-standing tableaux showing cultural events like weddings, festivals
and costumes; to traditional weapons, musical instruments, arts and crafts, ceramics, and
flora and fauna.

4. Why is visiting historic sites, shrines, landmarks, and museums important in the study of
history? How has your previous experience of visiting a specific historic landmark or
museum helped you in the understanding of a historical fact or event?

In some ways. It can happen that at museums and historic sites you get better information
than what you would see on the internet, or even in many legit books. In addition, actually
seeing things in context can help develop one’s understanding of events, characters, etc…

5. How can educational institutions help further in preservation of our history and culture?

Education in itself is the key to preserve history and when we say intitutuins then they have
alot to do. We humans always value anything when someone tells that it's valued or we
somehow figure this out in our life. Like, time First, institutions have to develop
curriculums and extra-curricular activities so the knowledge will pass on to generations.
Second, preservation achieved by educational institutions will only be knowledge, after
that we need community effort to help preserve historical sites, artefacts and buildings.
